Library Receives Bushfire Message Books

Victoria's Premier John Brumby presented the State Library of Victoria with a collection of books containing messages of condolence sent in response to the 2009 Victorian bushfires.

The message books include thousands of notes of support and sympathy from people across Australia and the world.

Library CEO and State Librarian Anne-Marie Schwirtlich said she is honoured that the message books will be held in the in the Library’s collections.

"The State Library has preserved the story of Victoria for more than 150 years – who we are, what we have seen and what we experienced, both good and terrible," Anne-Marie said.

"The messages contained within these books will be preserved for generations to come. They will be read and remembered. The State Library is proud to house them for the people of Victoria."

The Library's 2009 Victorian Bushfire Message Book Collection also includes yellow ribbons, bells and wreaths from the 2009 National Day of Mourning, illustrations from Japanese students, and other material relating to the fires.

A selection of message books and related material is on display in the Library's Cowen Gallery until 17 March 2010. You can view the entire 2009 Victorian Bushfire Message Book Collection by request in the Heritage Collections Reading Room.
