Lazarus Diary Now Online

2 October 2006

Today the Library launched its online version of the Lazarus' Diary, a rare first-person account of the Eureka uprising. Recently purchased at auction by the Library, the diary is a significant addition to the collection, providing unique insights into both a pivotal moment in Victorian history and one man's life in the young colony.

The diarist, Samuel Lazarus, was an enterprising young man who ran an auction business at the Ballarat goldfields. Just 19 at the time of the uprising, he recorded his observations with remarkable intelligence.

The online interactive version of the diary allows viewers to read it from cover to cover, zoom and pan individual pages and compare the handwritten entries with a full transcript. Additional information about Lazarus and his diary is also available on the Library's Treasures website.

And for those who would like to view the original diary, it will be on temporary display from today in Ballarat, at the Gold Museum.
