Dermelect Self Heating Body Polish gets job done

New year, new you -- such a cliche! That said, this is a great time to work on rehydrating those elbows, knees and feet that will soom be in spring frocks and strappy sandals. As an ardent exfoliation fan, even I have to admit that many of my favorite scrubs -- salt, sugar, shell, whatever -- can be too drying in the winter weather. So I was delightfully surprised to learn about Dermelect's Thermal Self Heating Total Body Polish.

Out with the old, in with the new ....

Dermelect

Out with the old, in with the new ....

It comes out of the tube stiffer than toothpaste, a firm white cream flecked with blue beads that create a heating effect when blended onto the body ("zeolite technology" according to the press release). It goes on smoothly, no grit, which made me question the power of its "polishing" abilities. The "heat" quickly dissipates (within seconds actually -- not sure I would have even noticed it if it wasn't mentioned on the box), but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. (No doubt thanks to the papaya and pineapple enzymes, one of nature's most potent cleansing and clarifying combos). The jojoba butter and Vitamin E leave a lovely moisturizing protective layer on the skin's surface, so I didn't have that shrinking raisin feeling later in the day (an especially nice bonus when wearing tights or long-sleeved sweaters all day).

4-oz. tube, $40, available at Dermalect.com.

Lady Gaga moves magazines; Snooki shades and slippers

Catching up on some of the past week's biggest style stories:

JonVey Salon spotlights fashion at opening party

If the New Year means you're hunting for a new 'do, trying a new salon may be in order. But plunking yourself down in the chair of a stylist you've never met before can be nerve-wracking. A great way to acquaint yourself with a salon's style quotient without the commitment: checking out its stylists' work on the runway.

A chance to do that comes in the form of a party featuring local designers on Saturday evening at newly opened downtown destination JonVey Salon.

    Inside JonVey Salon

Welcoming clients into its chairs since Monday, the two-man operation is home to longtime local stylists Cameron Hinke, formerly of Studio Lagorio, and Kao Vey Saephanh, who previously tended locks at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa. As for the name, it's the combination of the stylists' middle names.

Instead of a simple cocktails-and-snacks affair, the duo decided to celebrate the opening with a party showcasing their hairstyling talents alongside the work of local designers Amy-Jo Tatum, Justin Jamison, Alyssa Nicole and Erandeny Torres.

"It's kind of like, go big or go home," says Hinke.

To that end, they'll be styling models with a variety of looks -- including wedding updos, styles for guys, glamorous everyday options and dramatic, editorial creations -- and pairing them with the designer that's the best match for that particular style. The fun, youthful apparel of Alyssa Nicole, for example, will be shown with everyday waves, while menswear designer (and the only San Francisco participant selected for the recent Arts of Fashion Foundation international student competition held here last month) Justin Jamison's apparel offers the stylists a chance to show off their work with men's hair.

Along with the fashion show, which we hear will be a snappy 15 minutes, the party also offers food, beverages and a chance to get quick tips and advice about blowouts, makeup and the Kevin Murphy products the salon carries from the stylists. During the last half-hour, there will be a raffle of products and services, including complimentary cuts and color.

The salon carries the Kevin Murphy line.

Andrea Linett named creative director at eBay

Regular readers of Lucky magazine may have wondered where co-founder and creative director Andrea Linett would land next, after following founder Kim France out the door last fall. EBay just announced Linett as the new creative director for eBay Fashion, its expansive style destination.

Andrea Linett: From Lucky to eBay.

Andrea Linett: From Lucky to eBay.

"Working with eBay's fashion business, marketing and communications units for North America, and the company's technology team, Linett will drive the creative vision for the company's multibillion-dollar fashion business and will be responsible for advancing the image, voice and editorial style for the Marketplace's clothing, shoes and accessories category," the company said in a news release.

Linett spent nearly 10 years helping define Lucky's look and feel, as a stylist for photo shoots, with her own monthly personal fashion picks, and as a co-author of several Lucky style guides. Prior to Lucky, she had been a writer and editor at Harper's Bazaar and the much-beloved Sassy. The back page inspired I Want to Be Her, a website Linett launched last fall using illustrator Anne Johnston Albert, who had drawn her each month for Lucky. She has also worked as a stylist for commercials and music videos, and as a brand consultant, eBay said.

Linett starts immediately and will be based in New York, but will be at eBay's San Jose HQ on a regular basis to work with the teams there.

EBay's last style guru was Constance White, who left in August after 7 years with the company. Retail and ecommerce veteran Miriam Lahage joined the company shortly thereafter as general manager of eBay Fashion.

Since April of last year, eBay has corralled its extensive fashion inventory of new, used and vintage items under eBay Fashion, and added components such as flash sales, mobile shopping apps and Lookbooks to spotlight customers' style. Not surprisingly, Linett reportedly wants to give the site a more magazine-like feel.

Ironically, when Brandon Holley took over as Lucky editor in December, the fashion press speculated that her online experience was a factor, as magazines scramble to maximize their web offerings and communities.

    GetGlovd, the germ-fighting accessory

New SFUnzipped blogger Cindy Ha considers the latest innovation in gloves:

"Antibacterial" is nothing new in the hand-sanitizing or cleansing market. But how about in fashion accessories? GetGlovd, a company that produces 100 percent natural bamboo yarn, is said to be antimicrobial and antibacterial, according to the company website.

    Cindy Ha

During the height of cold and flu season, one can never be too cautious. If you're not quite brave enough to incorporate the surgical mask as a fashion staple, perhaps Getglovd could be the gateway product for your illness prevention needs.

I can't say whether these gloves decrease the chances of getting ill (my pathetically weak immune system prevents me from a thorough product test run) but I can say that the gloves serve the purpose of providing comfort and warmth.

Available in adult sizes for $19.99 and children sizes for $10.99 at Getglovd.com.

Year in Fashion: What do you remember?

We fit as many fashion moments as we could into the Year in Fashion in today's Style section, but inevitably they didn't all fit. Here are a few more. Please share yours in the comments section.

Stylish sips make holiday gifts: Iron Horse, Absolut, Perrier-Jouet

What's a frazzled person to do when they haven't a clue what to bring to a holiday get-together, or give to the person who has everything? For those who imbibe, it's easy: A chic bottle of wine or spirits that your recipient can put on display -- or even better, that the host can uncork the moment you walk through the door.

    Here are three quick suggestions.

    • First: Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut and two Champagne flutes in a gift box ($45).

Flowery sentiments: A bottle of Perrier-Jouet sends a nice message at the holidays.

Flowery sentiments: A bottle of Perrier-Jouet sends a nice message at the holidays.

The wine house is famed for its flower label, and for its tricky-to-pronounce name. It's a combination of French and Dutch, or so its chief executive told The Chronicle when he was in town a few years back. Impress your friends two ways, first by bringing it, and then by saying it correctly: PARE-ee-yay zhoo-ETT, with a hard "t" sound at the end (not zhoo-AY.)

    • Second: Absolut vodka, in its new limited-edition "Absolut Glimmer" bottle that is designed to look like cut crystal and has a certain snowy, showy appeal.

Ice is nice: Absolut Glimmer's showy bottle makes for a cool Christmas.

Although it isn't made of pure crystal, that's a good thing for the pocketbook -- it's modestly priced at just under $25. Who needs to tuck this one into the cabinet? Serve it on a silver tray, preferably by a butler wearing gloves.

    • Last, but not least: Sonoma County's Iron Horse Vineyards has released a do-gooder wine for the holidays. Its 2005 Ocean Reserve sparkling wine ($40) is a limited production blanc de blanc made in partnership with National Geographic and other organizations to help save the oceans.

Give to receive: Iron Horse's 2005 Ocean Reserve helps to save the seas. Only 1,000 cases were made.

    The Chronicle

Iron Horse will contribute $4 a bottle to National Geographic's Ocean Initiative to help restore the health and abundance of the oceans. The front label features an underwater photo, while the back label contains a high-tech element that, when scanned with a free smart phone app links the consumer to a video explaining the creation of the wine, the ocean's role in the winery's micro-climate and several sustainable seafood recipes. Available at PlumpJack wines, some Whole Foods and Mollie Stones markets and by the glass at Americano restaurant at Hotel Vitale, San Francisco. It will also be served at the traditional Christmas Eve "Feast of the Seven Fishes" at A16 restaurant in San Francisco, says Iron Horse Chief Executive Officer Joy Sterling.

    The gift of gorgeousness

The bustle of holiday shoppers and sightseeers in San Francisco's Union Square reminded our intrepid beauty correspondent Sarah Adler of her former NYC abode -- as did this charming cosmetic case from Urban Decay.

    Urban Decay

The Book of Shadows III is 16-shade eye makeup collection that evokes the edginess and excitement of the Big Apple, complete with pop-up LED-lit landmarks and uber-vibrant shades like Money (metallic light green), Rockstar (deep red-purple with metallic base) and Suspect (sheer sparkly beige). We also love the sopisticated temporary tattoo set that Urban Decay also recently introduced ... the The book's whimsical 3-D street/skyline design pays homage to the big apple's landmarks, energy, and inhabitants. $54, UrbanDecay.com (also Sephora, ULTA, Macy's, Beauty.com).
