Video games blamed for bad teeth

Will the scapegoating ever end?
After facing accusations that it caused obesity and sexualised children, the video games industry is now being blamed for the poor dental condition of the masses. You read that right: Bad teeth.

New research presented during the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research in Washington found that eating snacks when playing computer games could lead to poor oral health.

Quite why eating them when playing computer games is any different than from eating them when watching Dick And Dom is beyond us.

Researchers observed 12 to 16-year-old teenagers and found that those who were 'addicted' to computer games were more likely to suffer from tooth decay and related complications.

The study also found that teenagers who 'had no parental restriction on screen time' tended to eat more when in front of the console.

The Washington researchers stressed the need for a structured eating pattern - commenting that those teenagers without one increased the risk of tooth decay by 30 per cent.

"It is better for your teeth and general health if you eat three meals a day instead of having seven to ten snack attacks. If you do need to snack between meals, choose foods that do not contain sugar", lead researcher Dr Nigel Carter said.

So kids prone to tooth decay have parents who (i) Allow them to eat what they want and (ii) Don't restrict their leisure time in any way.

Remind us quite what video games have to do with this again?

Or is it lack of hygiene?? Rolling Eyes
Focker420 on 6 Apr '10
They're also the reason I'm blind and have hair on my palms.

This is hilarious.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Reading these things makes me laugh at how pathetic these people conducting 'research' really are.
Reaper7787 on 6 Apr '10
My bad teeth are due to my mother being born with teeth problems, also Colgate are liars.
Blumiere on 6 Apr '10
Oh yeah, over the years of my video-gaming the health of my teeth has been going down hill.

But when I discovered you could kill hookers in GTA, I needed braces from that point on!
Brayster on 6 Apr '10
Bo11ocks! I've been playing games for 16 years, and I was told 2 years ago by my dentist that my teeth are in such good condition that I only need to see him once a year instead of 6 months.

It's becoming more and more obvious that Video Games are the "in thing" for the blame crowd. How about actually blaming the parents for a change?
adetheterrible on 6 Apr '10
This really is beyond a joke now. Hopefully non-gamers will start to see through these pathetic, immature and downright dishonest stories.

In the meantime, if the press or any social groups are looking to blame videogames for other issues, here's a few equally pathetic ones I've come up with myself:

1. The cause of baldness
2. The spread of aids
3. The cause of cancer
4. Global warming
5. The extinction of the dinosaurs
6. Cot death and still born babies
7. Why people turn to terrorism
8. The cause of road accidents
9. Physical ugliness!

Don't forget the recession also. Videogames are blatantly to blame for that aswell.

I'd be President of Moon Colony 1 by now if it wasn't for those damn GTA games. Curse you gaming!!!
GTCzeero on 6 Apr '10
It's quite funny. Just yesterday I was reading that science has proved that both Genghis Khan and Oliver Cromwell were avid players of the Total War series which apparently made them conduct all of their massacres and invasions. Whaddya know, huh?
lordirongut on 6 Apr '10
We're fat, violent and now - we have bad teeth.
I suppose I can't argue with that - I'm too busy shooting up supermarkets in between fistfuls of pork scratchings to clean my teeth.
newsinthefield on 6 Apr '10
vIDEOGAMES GAVE ME BETTER REACTION TIME AND DEXTRERITY. tHE DAILY MAIL WAS RIGHT, IT'S BAD FOR US.

Looks like the populist view is running out of excuses to berate the industry.
Desaima on 6 Apr '10
OH MY GOD!!! Is there anything left that video games can't be blamed for now? I think not.

Mind you, this now paves the way for some Wii/DS Shovelware. I thinking in the same line as "Babiez" and all that s***e - "Dentistz", and "My First Dental Practician", teaching "violent and sexually aware" kids good oral hygiene. Just remember where these ideas came from when the BAZILLIONS of royalties start coming in *wink wink nudge nudge*.
Taproot601 on 6 Apr '10
Hmm, I'd actually argue the opposite...

I'm much more likely to pork out while watching a film - it's not easy to command your squad on MAG with a mouthful of crisps!

Also, I utterly detest grimy controllers with bits of food stuck in the cracks... Mad

For those reason I would say that I eat less whislt gaming as I feel compelled to get up and wash my hands after scoffing anything...
English Shmuppet on 6 Apr '10
Well they've been blamed for everything else so why not bad teeth. Pretty soon we'll find out Joseph Fritzl played the Sims.
Marlonjb on 6 Apr '10
Why are there never any reports saying "Healthy eating causes extreme smugness" or the likes?
Sneeze on 6 Apr '10
How can anyone eat when they're playing a game?

Anyway, if you're playing longer then there probably is more chance of snacking BUT if you're not playing longer, then surely you're just going to snack at about the same time you would if you were playing?
EthanWoods on 6 Apr '10
I 'snacked' on an entire roast dinner yesterday while wading through the endless Final Fantasy XIII cutscenes!!
snips10 on 6 Apr '10
How can anyone eat when they're playing a game?

Best I can manage is a quick tea chug inbetween the action parts. Sweetened with hermasetas and honey for your information Wink

Oh I love these, what's next I wonder. Question

I've seen US gamers at game conferences and they do look as bad as you would think!
So much for the stereotype us British have about our teeth..... mine are pristine Very Happy
sammikid on 6 Apr '10
I thought my teeth were bad because I'm English. Michael caine would be proud of me.
SICARIUS1 on 6 Apr '10
HE says choose foods that do not contain sugar but Dr Nigel Carter should no that no sugar drinks contain bad chemicals like aspartame and acesulfame-k which if you look up these chemicals should be banned sum researcher he is what a k**b

Videogames killed my parents, my dog, my baby sister and my goldfish
They destroyed everything I hold dear, and ruined my existence

Since purchasing a games console I have murdered 47 people, racially abused another 96 and bought 77% more pornographic material
All of this happened within 2 days of buying a console

I thought your numbers were low, and then I saw that they all took place within 2 days. For me it's been 21 years and my numbers are much more inflated.

When the missus forces me to sit through two hours of soaps I don't move except to shovel crisps and chocolate down my throat, unlikely to be good for my teeth.

When I PC play games I can barely manage half a cup of coffee before it goes cold.

Also, I am one of these daft gamers Embarassed that ducks and leans and swings around when playing a game as though I'm actually in the car/plane/spaceship/motorbike and my leaning will have a beneficial effect...looks completely ridiculous but the point is I am actually moving. I also use my hands for control and the fact my brain is working on strategies and tactics as opposed to vegetating in front of a tv worrying who will get the last malteser has got to be healthier.

When playing console games I jump around even more as my pals and I tend to have a laugh and try to put each other off....Ok we drink beer but we drink a hell of a lot more when not playing games.
Lastly, despite 25+ years of gaming I've never had a filling and often get complimented on my teeth by yanks (they're all mine as my mother made them) Very Happy
Yellow6 on 7 Apr '10
I completely understand- I play 25 hours of video-games a day and I satisfy my food cravings by eating carrots. the only problem is that the mythological forces within the carrots are slowly turning me into a rabbit! Now I feel the urge to play every game with Bugs Bunny in and hide down a rabbit hole whenever I get a game over....

*squeak squeak*
