Dead Space 2 'more action than horror'

Visceral Games teases fans with light details of EA sequel
Dead Space 2 will feature less horror and more action that its predecessor, according to developer Visceral Games.

The studio - whose Dante's Inferno hits UK stores on Friday - said it has a dedicated team working on Dead Space 2 and that the new game would "empower" players.

CVG confirmed last month that the Dead Space 2 release date would arrive before before March, 2011. Highly likely to be Christmas, then.

"We've got two main teams; we've got some supporting content for Dante's Inferno coming out, but we'll mostly shift our attention to Dead Space 2," Visceral senior VP Nick Earl told Industry Gamers.

"The first one was well received, and we want to take advantage of that start with something that has tremendously wide appeal.

"We're more focused on the action than the horror this time. We're more empowering to the player. We've got a lot of feature innovation and we feel comfortable because we have something with resonance and we have something that's so capable.

He added: "I've heard some people say that Dead Space was the most "un-EA game" they had seen, and they meant it as a compliment! Funny anecdote, when [EA CEO] John [Riccitiello] in his position several years ago and was touring the studio, he said he wanted a horror game. He went away and when it came back, he helped support and finally realize that game in Dead Space.

"That's one thing we like about Visceral; we can really establish a new audience with it. I feel it's on the pathway to greatness and being widely recognized. We love the culture we've established in doing edgy properties like Dead Space and Dante's Inferno, created with the philosophy "let's build quality and let the rest follow."

more action than horror... they better not take the goodness and atmosphere of the first and make it a space shooter.

the pacing and horror elements were key to the game.

it better not be resident evil 5 all over again
alexkidd on 3 Feb '10
Another shooter on the way.
Good that i bought ps2, new Silent Hill is on the way. Guess to play som survival horrors i'll have to buy wii. Embarassed

So Dead Space 2 is to Dead Space 1 what Aliens is to Alien?

I like it Very Happy
Aussie Harrison on 3 Feb '10
You mean to tell me the first actually HAD horror elements to it. All games considered horror nowadays are more action orientated. Only Silent Hill and Forbidden Siren has kept to the horror concept.
jadehill2001 on 3 Feb '10
I don't like the sound of this - let's hope they don't go down the Resident Evil 5 route and screw up their formula.

If it aint broke, why fix it?!??!?!?!
ranaraptor on 3 Feb '10
Correct me if i'm wrong, but Dead Space was praised for being the first truly terrifying game of this generation (apart from the Condemned series).

Either you played it on a lower difficulty, or you havnt played the game. On hard and impossible mode, Dead Space was truly a harrowing experience.
Aussie Harrison on 3 Feb '10
I thought Dead Space was a bloody scary game, and I played it in daylight in a room full of friends. Had some great moments of tension where you were EXPECTING something to happen and it didn't, and loads where you weren't expecting it and stuff DID happen. That's brilliant horror pacing, right there.

The fact this statement has been made at all fills me with dread about what they've done to the sequel.
Dajmin on 3 Feb '10
I don't like the sound of this. The first one still scares me in the first few hours when I play it every so often.

The only way I can see this working is if it is like the...

*SPOILERS*
When you go onto the ship with all the soldiers on towards the end of the first, and you go into that big room and their are a fair few creatures in there. That sh*t me up.
NaththeNarc on 3 Feb '10
Im going to go against the grain here but I wasnt that impressed with Dead Space, dont get me wrong, it was a Fun and highly polished Game but it certainly wasnt scary, for me anyway.

Hearing about this new direction the Game is going in just makes it sound like a million other Action Games. Where are all the scary Games this Gen? It looks like its down to Mr Wake to give me my chills this year. You better not disappoint.

Agreed, it seems strange that as soon as a great game comes along they think they can improve it by changing it.

Mind you, by dumbing it down and appealing to the mindless shooter catagory they can sell more copies.....it's for our own good, it will be a better game, honest Wink
ingy on 3 Feb '10
I dont like the sound of this.

Surely the appeal of Dead Space was the fact that everytime you played it, you would totally s**t yourself.

This sounds like the Resident Evil 5 factor all over again.

No EA, dammit NNOOO!!! Mad
burnsyboy2004 on 3 Feb '10
The reasons I loved the first DS game was because it was the first thing since ResiEvil 1 GC Remake that really scared the Hell out of me. As well as they keep the scares in the game I'll be happy but, like a few others have said, I hope it won't go the way of Resi 5.
G_R7 on 3 Feb '10
I am glad I am not the only one that absolutely shat my pants playing it. I thought I was going soft!
kimoak on 3 Feb '10
Its terrifying, i have friends who could not even finish it they were too scared, its such an involving story to, i feel the game fails to get credit for that. Every element was planned out to keep u in a state of pressure, no safty of pulling up your inventory to tweek it then back to the action, u had to do that fast and pick ur moment. I don't like the sound of a more action based game but will prey that they can get the balance right. Dead Space is a classic, resident evil has lost its way!
ed_exley on 3 Feb '10
This makes me a sad panda.
theaface on 3 Feb '10
Hmmm. Not liking the sound of it. I liked the tension. Tentative movements around the ship, dreading each corner only to find there's nothing there. Then the bits that were straights and things came out at you. Mixing it up a bit. If it's too action orientated it may lose the spark that made it special.

Can't say I was "scared" as a few of you have been saying, but I will admit that a number of bits made me jump through sheer suprise. I want more games like that. Like the feeling Resi and SH give you. I don't want every game to turn into MW2.

ensabahnur on 3 Feb '10
...but the first wasn't scary. It was a good, solid game and it was a bit jumpy now and then- but scary? Pffft!

I just enjoyed it for the adventure and the fact that slicing limbs off Necromorphs is great fun. In terms of scares though- I'd describe it as mild!
MrPirtniw on 3 Feb '10
If they go down the more action than horror route, then they've already killed the game for me as it was the atmosphere of the first game that made it stand out.
Zero_Cool on 3 Feb '10

Now I wasn't scared by Dead Space but it had atmosphere ( well as much as you can for a game set in Space Razz ) by the bucket load. As long as they can keep that then I am for a change of pace.

Not sure MR Wake is a horror either well not in the shock sense anyway. I percieve that AW will be a psychological horror like Dead Space but we will see. Cool
lonewolf2002 on 3 Feb '10
Alarm bells are ringing! The original was incredible, probably my greatest single player experience. Please don't ruin the sequel. I did find the game super easy mind you, even on the hardest difficulty. So, ramp up the challenge and give us an insanity level x 10!

P.S. whatever you do, do not include dual-wielding in the sequel, for the love of God, NO!!!
Unition on 3 Feb '10
Less action more horror.

RE died because of RE4 and 5 (dont bother bitching I wont justify my opinion)

and now they look set to do the same with Dead Space, first multiplayer and now this? I'll have to play the game first to offer anything deeper than my initial thoughts but this doesn't sound that good being honest.
Marlonjb on 3 Feb '10
I'm a bit sceptical about the "empowerment" part. Sounds to me like you'll be gleefully blasting through it in no time at all, high-fiving your mate saying "Awesome!!11! Did you see that? I are teh leet!" at the demise of every dismembered enemy you've crushed under your boot heel.

Personally I would've gone down the fearing for your life at every step route and crapping your pants at every sound, not blasting through it like an unstoppable god, but that's just me.

Ah well, it's not like you can do anything about it. I'll still buy it anyway.
freds1 on 3 Feb '10

Couldn't have said it better. Nothing to worry about methinks. I didn't find the game scary at all but loved the tension. Once they get that right I'm happy. Anyways, I dont want Dead Space 2 to be a clone of the first one as I've already played that. I cant imagine they'll f**k this up.

True. Alan Wake is not the conventional horror Game where the scary monsters jump out behind doors or having lots of gory moments like Dead Space and Resident Evil but thats why im hyped for it. If Remedy can actually pull off the Pychologocial Horror aspects it wants to, then it should be the scariest Game so far this Gen (fingers and toes).
StonecoldMC on 3 Feb '10
I loved the first game - did justice to the white brick that used to sit on my desk! Razz

I'm all up for a better fighting mechanic but I really hope they don't take away the survival element and just make it a straight-out shooter...

It'll be difficult to keep a steady level of action without desensitizing the player to the creepier side of things - i.e. the old argument that states it's what you don't see that scares you!

Anyway, that's my serious post for the day...
PS3_fannyboy on 3 Feb '10
I liked Dead Space because it tried to do survival horror. But if you want to take the series down the Gears of war road, like RE5 and Mass effect 2, then you can go **** yourself I won't be buying the sequel. This generation is so lame. Everything has to be a damn Rambo style shooter to appeal to the dumb as **** casuals.
Nick33 on 3 Feb '10
The first game was scary in places; for me any enclosed area with a Hunter (regenerating dude) really got me freaked. But it focussed too much on making us jump and not enough on actually making us question what would be around the corner. I admit it was also scary when all you could hear was your own muffled breathing and suddenly a necromorph came up behind you.

I don't really know how they could fit a scary game into Dead Space 2's premise: a city ravaged by the necromorphs. It wouldn't be as scary, so thank God Visceral Games opted for the action root. It didn't hurt Resident Evil 4, did it?

But then look at 5...
The Sandbag on 3 Feb '10
Why change a proven formula and make it an actioner?! there are too many out there! Is this the old EA re-surfacing where committees of execs are fumbling around with statistics showing the popularity of dumb ass games like Gears of War?

Say it aint so!!!!!

alan wake is going to be about as scary as an episode of corrie. i'm looking forward to DS2 and trust that it'll be awesome.
Sinthetic on 3 Feb '10
It was the horror elements that made dead space so brilliant. I don't want empowerment in Dead Space i want desperation and hopelessness.

Not ISSACS BACK! Kicking ass and taking names mo fo!

well at least there's still Alan Wake to look forward to. If you haven't imported it, the brilliant silent hill remake too.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 4 Feb '10
sigh i see another resident evil 5 Sad
VISCERAL PLEASE, O PLEASE DO NOT TURN DEAD SPACE INTO A MINDLESS SHOOTER!
Evil or Very Mad

what is it with developers taking a well known series and changing its genre?
F.E.A.R is one of the scariest games i have ever played.
F.E.A.R 2 was just a mindless shooter, not scary what so ever!
resident evil 1,2,3,4 made me sh*t my pants but RE5 is the most disappointing game of all time!

PLEASE VISCERAL DO NOT DESTROY THE DEAD SPACE SERIES!
DEAD SPACE IS A SURVIVAL HORROR! NOT A f**king THIRD PERSON ACTION SHOOTING GAME!

if i wanted a mindless third person shooter i would play fear 2.
who do i have to kill to get a decent scary game?
all the scary series like RE, silent hill and such are now either action games or not scary at all like silent hill homecoming.
as they say, if you want something done you have to do it yourself!
blind_fools on 4 Feb '10
Was the PS3 version a decent port?

I might pick up the first game on the cheap as I never completed it before flogging the xbox...

snip.

If you've got a PS3 get Siren Blood Curse. Scared the s**t out of me.

If you have a wii though. I'd suggest either waiting for or importing Silent Hill Shattered memories.

and checking out the translation project for Fatal Frame 4. Probably the scariest game i've played all gen. It's just so bleak and constantly tense. makes the likes of resi 5 homecoming look like a childrens tea party.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 4 Feb '10
NO EA NO... Don't please don't, the Horror of this game makes it good.. If you have not alot of gore & horror it will be crap !! Sad
