The revered Ivor Novello music awards are to recognise video games for the first time.
The event will introduce a new category this year - best original video game score.
According to The Times, the Novello committee has 'concluded that the compositional skills required for an effective games soundtrack are equivalent to those for an original film or television score'.
Mark Fishlock, a member of the Ivors committee, said: "The Ivors has always sought to reflect the ever-changing world of songwriting and composing. The video games market has matured beyond recognition and big budget orchestral scores are regularly being commissioned.
"Writing music for games also requires a number of specialist skills compared with conventional film scoring, such as non-linear and multi-layered composition."
Which game soundtracks would you like to see rewarded, readers?
I'd like to see one of the Hitman games get an award, specifically Hitman 2 which I still think is the best videogame soundtrack of all time. Jesper Kyd is the composer for the Hitman games. BTW, the guy who made a lot of Medal of Honor soundtracks, on PSX and PS2, as well as the original COD, Michael Giacchino, won a Golden Globe the other day for his soundtrack on Where The Wild Things Are, so congrats to him. I'd love one of the MGS games to win an award.
Additionally, the Assassins Creed 2 soundtrack was composed by Jesper Kyd, so you know, the guy's talented.
Personally, I think Shoji Meguro should get it, partially because i'm a big fan of digital devil saga and persona, but mainly because his music is pretty damned awesome.
