Gran Turismo 5 3D out this summer - report

Cutting-edge version to be released alongside first 3D TVs
You may have read about Polyphony showing off Gran Turismo 5 running in 3D at last week's CES show in Vegas. According to reports, you could be playing it in 3D on your PS3 by this summer.

Motor Trend was told at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon car show, where some impressive GT5 tech was being showed off, that Polyphony plans to release a "3D version" of the game to coincide with the release of the first 3D TV sets to hit the market.

With Sony and other companies getting those lovely gizmos out this summer, GT5 3D could be out around then, along with the PS3 firmware update that Sony says will enable 3D gameplay on its gaming powerhouse.

I would love to see even the 2D version released soon.

That may explain the delay if staff resources have been diverted to do this. Unsure how 3D in a driving game would look as all the cars are going in the same direction (well unless you've spun out). Probably the scenery which whizzing by in 3D could look good (except with poor vision in one eye I have never seen 3D look good, ever).

I suppose shooting games could be good with bullets being fired at you, making you dodge instinctively.

I get the distinct impression that Sony are holding GT5 back for the release of these new-fangled 3D tellymebobs.

Way to market the new technology, eh?

I can't be bothered with 3D though. I remember trying the Nintendo Virtual Boy, way, way back and my eyes can't look in the same direction now.

Yep totaly agree with Sirini, GT5 should learn to walk before they can run, all i can say is this game had better be bl**dy good for all the waiting we've been doing..

I can't say I'm too excited about the prospect of 3D either, but I guess it's worth keeping an open mind about. From what I understand, it achieves quite a difference in the overall experience and doesn't involve wearing stupid cardboard glasses - besides, you just know that we'll all be loving it in 10 years time.

I just don't want to have to buy a new TV!

I can't help but feel that if adding 3D is now the delaying factor, how much better could GT5 have looked if they have found they now have enough processing time to draw the frame twice (once for each eye) per frame?
Or does this mean that to run in 3D you'll have to run at 30fps instead of 60fps?

Why does everyone think that Polyphony somehow, owe them anything because they've had to wait for a game? It's f**king ridiculous, it's got past the point where people are saying it as a joke.

They don't owe you f**k all! 5 years is a bloody long time and an incredibly painful wait for fans, but, f**k you if you think you're somehow above them because of this.

I think it should run at 60fps, that's why you need a 120hz tv, so it can run two screens at 60fps?

I'm really looking forward to this, haven't played GT since number 3, although the latest demo - thing, REALLY put me off.

Wow. I don't think it's too unfair to give them a bit of stick for continually saying "It's going to be out any second now!" for about three years...

Maybe if they delay it a little bit longer, we can play it on our holodecks.

True, that is annoying . . although I think they've usually given it a fair bit of warning? (I don't have evidence for this, but I always thought it was months prior to release). Although, if they didn't exist, there'd be no GT, so, no - one can really complain, can they.

In the article C&VG have linked to, they are referring to GT5 coming out this summer. Not a 3D version. Mike Jackson seems to have read it wrong.

I just don't understand the point of 3d.

Without that Head Tracking technology that was all the rage a couple of years ago it means nothing to me.
fanboy on 16 Jan '10
I wouldn't want to guess how long the average gamer spends playing in a single session or in an average day. But have those amount of hours been tested while using 3D glasses? And over many months or years? As far as I'm aware there's an amount of eye fatigue and other minor physical issues that can affect some people when spending just two hours watching a 3D movie. I guess the early adopters will demonstrate the saftey and pitfalls of long-term, constant use of this new technology.
Jensonjet on 16 Jan '10
I'm no expert, but I'm just going to give my 2 pence.

I'm assuming you're worried about the rapid rate the glasses flicker in each eye? This shouldn't really be any different to screen refresh, should it? I've not quite got my head around the concept, but, for every frame you see, you see another frame of darkness (nothing)? Although this alternates between each eye, so there's always a frame in one eye and darkness in the other?

I think there's no way a product would be out there (avaliable to the public) in this day and age if there were still concerns about health, I can't see why it'd be any worse than just watching a normal screen myself, if anyones got any actual facts, or more info, that'd be great?
lwill on 16 Jan '10
Does this mean 3DTV is going to be delayed time after time like the sodding game?
