Colour us unsurprised: Activision has confirmed that a sequel to the splendid DJ Hero is being created. Actually, colour us excited and unsurprised.
In a press release covering DJ Hero's involvement in music event MIDEM 2010, the publisher let slip:
"2010 DJ Hero will be hosting an exclusive Listening Session, providing one lucky undiscovered musician the priceless opportunity to have their winning song mixed, mastered and featured in a future installment of DJ Hero."
it would be very easy to implement, especially with a learn the basics type tutorial walk-through.
the software could easily have features and options/aids to make even the most ham fisted person pull of a mix. i can think of a hundred ways to turn this into a fun and meaningful game without losing what its meant to represent.
i hear there is a company doing what i suggest anyway, real mixing. so just wait for that.
activision will stick to on-rail rollercoaster entertainment. its what they do best.
A sequel to an Activision game released only a few months ago? Who would have seen that coming?
They didn't mention how many sequels though... I would expect DJ Hero: Jazzy Jeff, DJ Hero: Judge Jules and DJ Hero: Greatest Hits by September. At least.

Was there a freestyling option of any kind in the original?

William Hill called. Apparently, you do not get good odds betting against this...
