Relentless Mario Galaxy rip-off hits PC

Planets, flying, stars and even Petey Piranha
One game pioneers a genre, others follow. That's the way the industry has always worked. But here's one example of a developer getting a little too carried away with the CTRL-C, CTRL-V commands.

It's called Duludubi Star, a China-developed (surprise, surprise) PC platformer and shameless Super Mario Galaxy rip off. The video below shows all the planet-exploring, star collecting malarkey ripped straight out of Mazza's quest, and some screenshots on Kotaku even show a Petey Piranha rip-off. Because half-inching the theme, look, gameplay and fundamental concept of a game isn't enough - you've got to rip the same enemies out too.

We're dying to play this.

I hpe Ninty take big legal action on their asses!!

Meh, the videogame industry was built on clone games. Look back to the days of Space invaders, pacman, etc. Those games where cloned to death, anyway a musician can 'cover' someone elce's song - why does that not work in games?
only_777 on 30 Nov '09
it does have an uncanny resemblance.

lets be honest, it looks better than mario galaxy

I agree, but then again I think that might be because Mario Galaxy (to me personally) was a majorily overhyped let down of a Mario game.

it does have an uncanny resemblance.

Uncanny? I'm pretty sure even those boss fights are an exact rip-off just with skins. Same goes for some of the levels Rolling Eyes

I look forward to the day China actually begins producing its own IP and then gets ripped off hopefully by the millions, if not billions. I recall watching a news report once where some of the fake label makers in China were complaining about bootleggers ripping off their bootleg merchandise of Western material. The sheer nerve! Laughing

@ dark_gamer

If you don't think Mario Galaxy is one of the best games evermade then your a plonker.

A) If you think its a let down then you dont know what a Mario game is about.

B) I don't care if its your opinion. Your opinion is rubbish.

Game of the year...and one of the best games ever made...overhyped you say?

Smile

Anyone who thinks that looks better than Mario Galaxy needs to get an appointment with their optician...

You do have to admire the programmers' shameless gall, though, don't you? A job at Microsoft surely beckons. Wink

Excellent! Loved this game. I played it before Super Mario Bros on the Amiga too Smile
kimoak on 30 Nov '09
Right so if this game turns out to be a carbon copy of Galaxy and plays equally as well, then will it deserve similar review scores as it's inspiration?

How much credit should be deducted for originality(Or in this case lack of)?

Equally what if Galaxy never existed at all and this was completely original. Would it receive the same acclaim as Mario?

How much praise do reviewers add on because it's a Mario game?

Couldn't agree more.
The core ninto games are the only reason I still got my wii. Only have 4 Wii games at the moment.(SMG, NSMBW, Prime trilogy, Pikmmin2 Wii version)

But it's PLENTY of reason anyway.

Oh yeah, and SMG2!

@Dark_gamer: Your opinion is SO overruled!
Nothing to say, really, it just is.

Even if I personally didn't like, say MW2 or Uncharted2, I wouldn't call them bad games, because they aren't.

See! Its a dodgy pirate some Chinese guys made!
only_777 on 30 Nov '09
Okay, I just saw the video and:

WTF, that does NOT look near as good as SMG.

Are you guys on mushrooms and if so are they cheap chinese rip off mushrooms?

They're not real ninty shrooms, that's for sure.
anakin22 on 30 Nov '09
Guys, this is China here (where I'm at right now, so I know whereof I speak). This is common.

I saw Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on 360 yesterday for £2 (they don't even have 360s or PS3s here!). There's a random generic Chinese-made FPS in all the games shops here using Halo 2's cover on the box - just with the words 'Halo 2' scrubbed off and the game's name put in its place. Every other game looks like a rip-off like this one.
TheTingler on 30 Nov '09
I'm pretty sure that they have just Hacked into Super Mario Galaxy software and made a handful of changes and they shipped it Laughing ! Trust the Chinese Rolling Eyes I wonder if its for the Vii as well Laughing

Galaxy, an overhyped let-down of a Mario game?! - How to prove that you know absolutely naff-all about quality gaming in one fell-swoop.

A GameRankings score of 97.30% proves that you are in a very miniscule minority.- Your opinion it might be (and you're entitled to it), but it's just plain wrong.

By the way, it looks nowhere near as good as Galaxy. Some people need their eyes testing. - Like many PC games, it looks as if it's lacking soul and flair. Something Galaxy could never be accused of.

Wow so an opinion, no matter how unpopular or not, gets your back up so much? sounds like you should go away and learn how to deal with other people's opinion's.

I'm not really calling you a loser, I don't even know you, but you're sounding a lot like one. Don't sink that low friend I don't think you're actually as stupid as you sound.

Oh wait hang on you are as stupid as you sound. So some pathetic fanboy can't take other people not liking his precious game? let me call you a WAAAAAAAAAAAMbulance.

Get a life kid. People are allowed to dislike whatever game they like, I'm already embroiled in an argument with another a$$hat because I don't like SF4 either. I just don't know where idiots like you come from, oh that's right Nintendo's backside.

Jeez man!! - Somone's back is up, but it's not mine. - I wasn't being serious about 'going away'. Take a bleeding joke. - Of course people are entitled to their own opinions. I couldn't give a soggy sh*t what you think about Galaxy, but for someone to suggest that the game has had more hype than its quality deserves is plainly untrue.

Sounds like you need to take some Kalms, chill out and realise when people are enjoying a bit of fun idle banter.
carterlink on 30 Nov '09
"Take a bleeding joke"
---------------------

Behold! the ultimate "get out" clause. The only joke here is you trying to start an argument then backing out when you realise how much of a toss wipe you sounded.

You like Mario Galaxy, well done. Mum and dad are proud. But don't have a go at anyone else just because they don't. As you were supposedly "having a joke" with me I'll be the bigger party here and say fair do's and leave it, but no award, review, or fanbase can over rule what any one person is entitled to think. Sometimes the "majority" the you mention is just the side with the most idiots on it. I'm not saying this applies to video games but it applies to a great many issues.
Marlonjb on 30 Nov '09
No, there really is no 'get-out clause'. It genuinely was just banter, and the funny thing is that you thought i was being serious and it really got your back up. I'm not the joke here. You are.

Where has all this sudden outburst of aggression come from? You make yourself sound as if you need therapy of some sort. Either that or medication.

Like i said, you are entitled to your opinion. - I happen to despise Modern Warfare and all it stands for. You hate Galaxy. Big deal. I don't care.

The only point i was making initially was that the game wasn't over-hyped or over-rated. That's the majority view, and for good reason.

.....And no, i haven't emmerged from Ninty's backside. I'm a multi-platform gamer, and thankfully one with a lot less 'anger issues' than you.
carterlink on 30 Nov '09
lol.
wiikii007 on 30 Nov '09
Whatever, I really cannot be bothered with you or your "argument" anymore. I agree with you on Modern warfare but I dont believe your "banter" excuse sorry.

Like I said. Bigger party walking away.
Marlonjb on 30 Nov '09
Mario Galaxy is a gamers dream. Those who think its 'crap' are either fan(ny) boys of Microsoft/Sony or either don't have a f**king clue about what a good game is! Even if you don't like cutesy sugary games, at least appreciate it for what it is..sublime!
Jon Ahmad on 30 Nov '09

Who was arguing? I certainly wasn't. - Cheers anyway. Thanks for the 'debate'. Glad we could agree on something.
carterlink on 30 Nov '09
wow, that is very familiar ain't it? Razz

also, i found the music to be just a few notes away from being the theme song to Overlord...
Sputnik133 on 30 Nov '09
The point Carterlink makes about despising MW2 is something I'd like to mention. There are many people out there who abhor war and violence, and I can understand where they are coming from. Me personally, I've never been keen of fps games since the original Doom. However, I can appreciate games like Half Life, Halo, Killzone, COD etc for their subject matter. If there is violence to be in ANY game, then that violence must be within the context of the subject matter.
Games such as Postal, Carmageddon, Thrill Kill and many others really f**k me off. They simply rely on shock factor, yet the game itself is so lame. Let's make this clear. First person shooters are slotted perfectly in their respected genre now, along with racing, fighting, RPG's etc. Half Life 2 still makes me sit up when I watch a friend play. Great stuff.(Can't wait to see HL3)
One man's beef is another's poison I say...
On the flip side of the coin, Nintendo with Mario, Yoshi, Kirby, Samus & Co are the gaming equivalent of Pixar...Give them respect, even if you (sadly) think you are Marcus Fenix or Solid Snake!
Jon Ahmad on 30 Nov '09
I kind of agree with what you're saying, but that's not the reason i despise Modern Warfare. I have nothing against war games in general, and i'm not saying that MW isn't a well made piece of software.

I heartily dislike it and its sequel because of the elitist, supposedly 'hardcore' fanbase that it panders to. - I know many who cannot see further than those two titles and believe themselves to be 'hardcore' gamers because they play it online constantly, to the detriment of trying anything else in other genres. I know this is a fanbase rather than the game itself, but to me the two go hand in hand.

I'm also not big on too much 'realism' in games. That's just my personal preferance for a little bit of escapism and fantasy.
carterlink on 30 Nov '09
Why would Squirtle sign up for such an obvious Mario rip-off?
Zero Jones on 1 Dec '09
Imitations happen unless you get an international patent that covers any country capable of having the technology and people with appropriate skills.
This reminds me a little of the Wii imposters in Brazil. The problem with patents is that it takes years to file one and costs a lot of money.
Desaima on 1 Dec '09
Just fired up my N64 and playing Mario 64...
Oh what a fantastic game it STILL is! I forgot how many classics this console had. 1080, Blast Corps, F Zero X, Wave race, Excitebike, Banjo, Diddy Kong, Mario Kart the list goes on...
In fact when you actually compare the number of triple A titles, Sony's Playstation seems to pale in comparison.
Aaaah! Nostalgia at its best!
Jon Ahmad on 1 Dec '09
Says a lot about how stonking SMG is that, even knowing that this game is a copy and likely to compare to the original as finding a cheque for £1000 in your crisp packet compares to finding half a slug, it still looks fresh and exciting.
Balladeer on 1 Dec '09
Hmm, I'd say it alludes to how simplistic Nintendo games are...

Now if they could do this with Uncharted 2 or LBP...then I'd be impressed! Wink
PS3_fannyboy on 1 Dec '09
Now why would they want to do a 'Tomb Raider' wannabe and a fanciful 'Demo'?
Seriously though, Nintendo games may look simplistic on the surface, but they do have a lot of depth. Games like F Zero GX are very challenging and thrilling to play. We must remember that Nintendo are the TRUE pioneers of gaming, long before Sony threw their hat in the ring. (It was always Nintendo vs Sega)
Wether you are a Xbox(er) or a Play(boy), if you ever want to be taken seriously by intelligent gaming veterans, then you MUST keep an open mind. By all means be a critic, but by God, justify your criticism in a constructive context.I love all three consoles, and each hold a special place in my heart for certain types of games I enjoy. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but be wise and debate in a sensible manner. After all, opinions are like the nose on your face, we all have one. I have LBP and it is a fab game, but hand on heart, I enjoyed Mario Galaxy more...

Well, I'll allow you F-Zero GX! I actually had a copy myself back in the day and it's still one of my favourite racers - possibly better than Wipeout if I'm honest!

However, that was back in the day when Nintendo's offering had power under the hood and not just party-poppers!

I've ultimately no problem with Mario games when the time calls but to release a square Gamecube and call it a whole new console...that's mickey the taking! Wink

I'm sure most intelligent console veterans would concur...
PS3_fannyboy on 1 Dec '09

Simplistic in what way? - Owning both consoles and all the games you mention, Galaxy asks far more of a gamer, in terms of variety, skills and possible solutions than both LBP and Uncharted 2, which as enjoyable and fantastic as that game looks, in gameplay terms is fairly basic run, jump and gun stuff.

LBP's crowning glory was always the level creation tools. The actual platform game itself is nothing more than a clunky, poor-man's Mario.

You make the usual mistake of judging a book by its cover. The bright, cartoony visuals of Galaxy belie the depth of its gameplay.
carterlink on 1 Dec '09
...yeah, and that awful handle on the Gamecube! What was all that about? Mind, I loved the sexed up Panasonic version of the 'Cube...(nice).
Yes, even I get irritated by too many Mario Party, Cooking Mama, Mario vs Sonic yadda yadda, and sometimes I wish the Big N would just GIVE US ALL A DAMN NEXT GEN PILOTWINGS!!!! (are you listening Mr Iwata?).
The Cube had a few gems (a mate had bought it before me) and when I first saw Rogue Squadron by Factor 5, I was rather envious. Very slick (technically) and quite a game.
But yeah, Ninty need to release more of their back catalogue of AAA's! And for the love of God, give us a proper Excitebike!! I want the weighty feel and solid gameplay, not silly 'cunning stunts' and daft speeds!! RANT OVER...take care bud.
