Kotick: "people are happy with existing franchises"

Activision boss says we're happy with updates
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick insists that the majority of gamers are happy to see new updates to existing franchises.

The world's largest third party publisher recently reported a sevenfold jump in profit to $195 million for the second quarter ended June 30. Its success can largely be attributed to the ongoing popularity of franchises such as Call Of Duty and Guitar Hero, both of which have seen numerous iterations.

"A small segment of very vocal gamers say everything has to be new and different every year," Kotick told The Economist. "Actually, people are happy with existing franchises, provided you innovate within them."

According to Kotick, the games industry was lacking discipline when he took over Activision as a struggling publisher back in 1991. The need to find "a balance between people who would be creative and entrepreneurial, and people who knew processes" was required, and persists to this day, he said.

Well, you're an ass, sir. And wrong as well.
I want new IP's.
Actually I like old Ip's like Mario etc, but because of you mr. jerk, now I only want NEW IP's !!
Get it! All your fault!

Actually I hate your current IPs Activision, so you're wrong there. Sadly the rest of the world loves them. Weird that Activision are the publisher I dislike the most and EA are now bubbling up towards my favourites. How times change.

A balance is required so that something doesn't feel 'milked' like most of Mr Kotick's franchises. We don't have a problem with sequels and spin-offs, we have a problem when you release 78 of the same game. Guitar Hero, for example, how many have there been in the last year?

What he is saying is that Activision don't want to take risks because they know that people will still spend sh1tloads on sequels. He is saying 'gamers are idiots, they can't see us bleed these franchises to death so lets give 'em more of the same. Why should we put any effort into our games when we can make them on the cheap?'

I predicted that Activision would be pillocks in some way during Gamescom. I was right.

Excuse me sir!

Take some of those millions MW2 makes and pump it into something differant. Something with substance instead of a simple run and gun.

For **** sake. If Al Qaeda need a target soon, I hope this man is it.

Call of Duty and Guitar Hero weren't really huge franchises until Modern Warfare and Guitar Hero 3.
Activisions huge success has only happened quite recently.

It's amazing how arrogant they have become in such a short space of time!

Their games graphics & gameplay are "always better" that the last one but when you play the new game you soon realise that it has the same annoying little bugs & glitches as the last one.

Why these big games companies feel the need to release a new COD or a FIFA every year is beyond me. EA haven't even fixed all the bugs in FIFA09 but they're going to release FIFA10 which will also be full of bugs as well.

I like my old ip's but I would never say I'm happy with JUST old ip's, I want new and old, and I want old games with new ideas and improvements, not just updates, an update just means better graphics to a lot of these developers, gameplay and design wise a lot of games this gen are no different to last gen games, and gen before that even.

Just churning out more and more derivates of the same franchise is no guarantee of success. You would have thought Activision would be painfully aware of this from their experience with the Tony Hawk's games; which have become more and more bland with successive releases since number 2 and the latest is resorting to a gimmicky controller to try and freshen the formula.

This guy shouldn't address gamers or allow anything he says to reach us!

He may be right in that OBVIOUSLY we're happy with sequels and franchises, as they clearly sell well.

His suggestion must be welcome from the games inudstry. He's effectively suggesting they'll not be creating any more games to compete against but will sit back and milk everything they can get out of the current franchises (Guitar Hero certainly reeks of that!).

If I were a share holder I'd dislike him even more... he's just suggested they can sit back and watch the money roll in, rather than continue to work hard and be aggressive with new games. FFS other developers, start copying Guitar Hero and making Modern Warfare-alikes, so we can shut this fella up!

The man is a ball bag.

But, he is right about the 'as long as they continue to innovate their current IP's', but he is wrong that we are happy with just those. EA have only realised this over the past couple of years and it has forced them to release two very good IP's in Mirror's Edge and Dead Space.

Enjoy your current success, Kotic. Once Activision become bland and even the most hardcore gamer fan gets bored with COD, your company will start to tumble. All companies become out of touch with their customers at some point, and you will find that you will have no choice but to start making an effort again. Just ask EA and Nintendo.

Personally I'm just waiting for Guitar Hero: Alisha's Attic...

If this guy has a goal to become the most hated man in the games industry, he's succeeded.

Activision definately turned to the dark side as soon as they released Sin on the pc. Half finished and buggy to hell. They just saw PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT!! Hell to the little people. and Little Computer People was shit! there I said it.

If you don't already own an 360 buy one off ebay, flash the drive then only ever play copied activision games on it.

way to insult your bread and butter there pal.

My favourite games from last christmas were definately Dead space, Mirrors edge and Left 4 Dead.

I don't mind sequels so long as they make sense and add something. when its essentially the same game repackaged and rereleased each year, It soon gets old. I don't know how Activision did it, they took two of my favourite series and buggered them up beyond all reason.

Lets face it, you would though? I know I would ;)

*and I don't mean buy the game* ;)

If everyone had the same attitude as Activision the industry would be stone cold dead in 10 years. Its new experiences which drive new adopters.

There's a healthy balance to be had look at EA now for example and how far they've come in the eyes of gamers. For every new FIFA you need a Dead Space.

I feel cold playing Guitar Hero nowadays and stick to RockBand- a franchise which only adds a new entry if they actually have something new

There's nothing wrong with a new game from an existing IP every now and then, it's when they come out every year that the format gets stale...

I bet h is only in it for the money anyway, by the time the hardcore fans get bored of being fleeced he will be able to retire happily with more money than any of us gamers could ever dream of.

I'm amazed at how much the tables have turned with EA and Activision in the last year alone. Have they secretly swapped CEOs?

Not much on the horizon for me from Activision anyway, so they won't be getting much, if any, of my money not that it matters to them though.

Yes Mr. Kotick, we're all so happy with the fact that the Guitar Hero franchise has got so far that it's biggest feature in the new game is the fact people can join in without going back to the menu first, that's better than any new game you could offer me...

We were all so pleased with the yearly Tony Hawk titles that we were so sad when it went away for a while, before returning with an inflated price and plastic gimmick board...

That being said, the idea of Band Hero and DJ Hero fill me with utter contempt, guess Activision's new franchises aren't all that tempting either.

Franchises sell. All us humans are idiots and they will buy or boycot whatever the magasine/website/friend/webforum geeks tell them.

There are far more being born then dying. There are always new gamers comming onto the market, which is why even now COD4 is at a stupidly high price. I think its actually one of the few games thats been arrogant enough not to drop theyre price.

Makes me wonder just how good MW2 will be, if they cant let the last (and old now) title trundle down its path to the bargain bin, like any other game.
