Pikmin 2: New Play Control!

Super sweet vegetable strategy masterpiece
Having only recently been treated to the Wii port of the original Pikmin, it's odd to see the sequel (which took the best part of three years to make) appearing just three months later. At this rate we'll have Pikmin 3 by next week, in which case you might want to hold onto your cash.

We're joking, of course. There is no Pikmin 3. However, Pikmin 2 will keep you plenty busy until such time as Nintendo decides the market is ripe for a proper Wii Pikmin revival, and if you managed to resist the urge to splash £30 on the remake of the first game, this is definitely the one to get.

Pikmin 2 is a proper sequel - the kind of game where you can tell instantly where all the development time went and that it was time well spent. It's a huge improvement over a very good original. The core gameplay is the same, as are the Wii-specific pointer controls, but everything else has been polished, improved, expanded or, in the case of the annoying 30-day time limit, removed entirely.

This time Captain Olimar isn't stranded on the planet of the Pikmin. After returning to his own world at the end of the first game, he's sent back by his boss to plunder the place for valuable salvage and earn the cash needed to save his haulage business from the administrators.

Consequently there's not such a rush. You still have the day-night cycle that means any Pikmin left stranded outside after dusk will be consumed by wild monsters, but you can play at your own pace. Venture as far as you dare, clear a few routes through the beautiful garden landscapes and scurry back to the ship while it's still light. As you grow in confidence you'll stay out later and explore the huge underground caverns that form the bulk of the game.

And once you've earned the 10,000 Pokos needed to save the company, you can carry on and collect any bits you missed.
Two new Pikmin types, purple and white, provide super strength and poisonous power to your army, and the addition of a second commander, Louie, means you can split the Pikmin into two active groups, switching between the leaders to keep an eye on things.

The leaders are decent fighters themselves, which is one thing we're not so keen on - if you can't face losing some of your rarer Pikmin to the tricky but weak little enemies that infest the caverns, you can leave them out of harm's way and do the dirty work with Olimar and Louie.

They're useless against bigger enemies though, and Pikmin 2 has some astonishingly gross creatures lurking in the subterranean depths. The horror when you stumble across a new one, and the sheer joy at figuring out its weakness and carrying its carcass back to your ship - that's the magic of Pikmin 2.

New creatures are added to the Piklopedia, a virtual zoo where you can observe them at rest in their natural habitat and throw carrots to try and goad them into action. Items of salvage are similarly, if less actively, displayed along with amusing notes from Olimar. It all adds up to a world that demands to be explored and rewards you amply for doing so.

There's also a challenge mode that's packed with specially designed levels and tight time limits. You have to organise a preset squad of Pikmin to plunder an area of randomly placed salvage and escape with as many survivors as possible. A second player can join in here, and also in a versus mode that sees the two commanders vying for control of precious marbles on a set of battle maps.

It's a great value package, particularly considering the GameCube version remains scarce enough to command high prices on the second-hand market. The addition of Wii controls doesn't make the game worth buying if you already own it on GC, but if you missed out in 2004 this is one of the best Nintendo games of recent years.

Verdict
Everything about Pikmin 2 is quality, from the characters to the cutscenes and all the incidental extras that make it a Nintendo classic. Still as good as it was five years ago.

cannot bloody wait. never played this 5 years ago so it'll be really fresh for me on thursday. I remember falling in love with pikmin and having nights where all i wanted to do was march the cute things around whooping bug ass.
pikmin is my favourite ip of all time, along with dead space haha. from one extreme to another.

Loved the games back in the day, although despite my outward obsession with them ironically I never did quite complete them both. 2 I got about 3.4 way through and 1 I kept wanting to savor because it was only like 6 hours long but never got round to playing it.

I do have a set of pikmin plush though, just need to get Olimar, Louie and the white pikmin and I've got the whole lot! They're sitting above my desk looking at me... Lucky they're helpless without a spaceman to throw them at my head

Shame its not Pikmin 3 yet.
They are probably rereleasing them to see what people think of it before announcing the new one is coming.

Looks cool, i also missed it on the gamecube so it will be a purchase down the line for me.

Just hope the gamecube ports don't takeover Wii games tho in re-releases

can't wait i loved the first pikmin and never managed t oget a copy of 2 for the cube. Seems pretty likely that there is a third pikmin on the horizon. Miamoto pretty much said as much in an interview earlier this year when he said he was working on pikmin then later clarrified he had nothing to do with the re releases.

Between this punch out and the re releases of the prime series i'm a happy camper for ninty titles.

Then there's the conduit and ghostbusters to look forward to.

Not a bad year for core games on the wii i'd say.

Just want to remind people that Little King's Story is also out this friday. A similar concept to Pikmin, but with RPG overtones. By all accounts, one of the best Wii games so far and certainly as good as anything released this year. Let's give it a bit of success.

oh yeah i saw a preview for little kings story a while back it looked a bit like a cross between pikmin and settlers. had sweet cartoon visuals too.

think i'll give that a look as well.

Roll on friday.

I only wish Nintendo had put Pikmin 1 & 2 on one disc, and the same with Metroid Prime. Okay, it would look odd in the collection, but so do the cases for the "New Play Control" games anyway -- though I did see one for Mario Power Tennis in GameStation that had the artwork taking up the full front of the box without the horrible white border -- and it wasn't just a display box, either, it had the barcode on the back. But sadly the days when Ninty used to throw many classics onto one compilation are long gone -- Super Mario All-Stars, we loved you so, please come to Virtual Console. The NES Marios are great, but they looked a million times better on the SNES.

Despite this, I've now given in and ordered this and number 1 for my Wii, as now my PS3 has failed too, my Wii and DS are the only consoles I've got left that I trust (well, and my trusty GC, which still works brilliantly, but I like the idea of the new Pikmin re-releases having pointer controls and supporting widescreen and progressive scan -- should look a bit nicer than the GC versions). I have the US version of Pikmin 2 (and a Freeloader, natch), and all of you who plan to get the Wii version but have never played the GC one are in for a real treat; it really does improve upon number one in every single way.

Roll on Metroid.

You do realise that all the Play Control titles have double-sided box artwork? You can turn them inside-out if you prefer.

I must confess, the more I look at those lovely screen shots, the more I think that I might enjoy playing it again. Even now, in the age of HD, high-tech realism, I still think the game looks incredibly pretty.

Pikmin 2 is a true classic and deserves to get the sales it never received first time round.

I agree with Little King's Story as well. Shame it hasn't received any kind of exposure at all, as it looks good. Hopefully the final product will match the concept.

hope pikmin 2 gets big sales. Might hopefully secure release of pikmin 3. If they aren't working on it already.

All these play control games except except mario tennis seem to point towards catering to fans of other existing wii games or potential sequels.

Prime one % 2 are for the guys that bought 3 but didn't own a cube

Pikmin 1 &2 make me think 3 is in production.

Likewise for chibi robo and possibly donkey kong.

I like em. they may be ports but at least they are well thought out and add something different to already claasic games that by and large are quite rare. or were missing something first time round. reaaly hope they follow these up with mario sunshine and windwaker. controlling fludd with pointer control would be ace as would wind waker with twighlights controls. then again in my mind wind waker was perfect to begin with. hell it had the best final blow to gannon ever. it might have been cartoon styled but you drove the sword of time right into the *******s face.

had an hour on this at 9. love it so much. i spent 5 mins just watching the title screen morph about, it's captivating. i'm not sure how much the visuals have been amped up, but they def look pretty. lovely textures throughout the objects etc...

the piklopedia is utter genius, really really sweet.

this is going to eat up my time for the next month, guaranteed. i'm back to being with my favourite franchise and i'm excited.

is it just me or does the pikopedia look alot more detailed than the main game. Almost as if it has been ripped from something else in development.

Or maybe my love of pikmins made me delude myself into thinking thiers another sequel already waay into deveopment.

Anybody else looking forward to Nintendo's announcement at E3 this year. I think its going to be interesting.

i'm hopelessly loving this. my girlfriend really makes me laugh, she keeps nagging me to play it so she can watch hahaha. if that doesn't tell how good this is, nothing will. gotta love the purple pikmin, just ordered the 30cm plushie from nintendo hahahaha.
