Glen Schofield, general manager of Visceral Games, has revealed that the studio's 2008 survival horror release Dead Space has sold around 1.4 million copies to date.
The new IP made its debut on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in October last year to critical acclaim, and Schofield says he's happy with how the title has performed at retail.
"I'm happy with that, based on the economy," Schofield told GameSpot. "Last year could've been one of the greatest launch years in the history of video games around October time, but it was a year where people bought less games than they normally would.
"Do I wish it sold more? Absolutely. But the critical acclaim and the number of awards - we're at 75 and counting now - have made [Dead Space] bigger than just the number of sales. If you look at used sales and rentals, we're looking at probably three or four million people who have played the game."
While Visceral, formerly EA Redwood Shores, has yet to confirm a direct sequel to the title, Wii series entry Dead Space: Extraction has been announced for release later this year, and Schofield insisted there is a market for adult-themed games on Nintendo's console.
"If you look back at Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil 4 for the Wii, those sold close to a million and over a million," he said. "MadWorld, to me, personally it's an art piece, and after a while, I got really tired of the art look. For me, I just couldn't take the black and white. So I don't think it's a matter of there not being a market, because soon there will be 60 million Wiis out there."
PC control system could've been smoother but with a few tweaks, it becomes playable. That aside, it's a very atmospheric and polished experience. Roll on sequel...
this was defo one of my favourite games from last year. its the one game i recommended to all my friends and not one of them was let down by it. still need to get back into it and finish it on impossible. Kudos to EA for actually giving us what we want, new great games. and less of the reskinned stale efforts from the sports titles.
reminds me i must get round to finishing this game... so far so good. It actually makes me jump. It's more Resident Evil that Resident Evil is! RE5 is fun, but just not scary. Come on Capcom.. get back to your roots!
got it on release, got 1000g for it within 1 week. my favourite game of all time. cannot wait for extraction and the sequel on 360. good job visceral games.
