It was probably to try and turn Modern Warfare into solo franchise so they could milk it in the future as well as making another Call of Duty game. Not surprising.
To the poster above: I tend to refer to MW2 as "MW2" - it's just easier than the mouthful, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2". *yawn* Anyone really give a shit about this stuff? Once again, the film The Dark Knight did quite well for itself without the Batman name on the posters, didn't it? they could call this game shitcan modern warefare 2 and it will still sell truck loads.
I think only call of duty 5 and 7 has and will be helped by the brand. Sorry but most of the people think, as it has call of duty in the name, that automatically means it has to have a number with it, yet if you work it out, 2 years ago we had Call of duty 4 : Modern Warfare, that has a number in it, where was 5 in WAW?, and if that is so, where the hell does the 7 come from if a 6 hasnt even been given?
This is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, No ****ing number, just called it MW2, or for those ones who want to be cocky, Call of Duty 4.5 lol.
Damnit, pisses me off when they're like, Cant wait for COD6!, COD5 doesnt exist, so stfu with it :) Yeah, the numbering on these games makes as much sense as they do on the Rambo films;

just because they took away the number because it was fast making its way into ridiculously high numbers, making it sound like its getting whored, doesnt change anything... Marcofarlio hit the nail on the head here I think... But technically there are seven different Call of Duty Games.

Expect the next on to be called Call of Duty 11, Holiday in Cambodia. deciding to change actual sequencial numbers for the year it'll mostly be played in and a song reference in the title to confuse the **** out of everyone else.
waiting for the inevitable Guitar hero cross over when they decide to make COD: Vietnam, featuring tracks from Hendrix and Agent Orange. He he....i wouldn't be at all surprised if they did that! um so i guess that applies to all other games, e.g grand theft auto series?
because vice city was the 4th grand theft auto but it wasn't called gta 4. and san andreas was the 5th in the series, was that called gta 5? no
the 6th game in the gta series was called gta 4.
