XBL Update Preview Program detailed

Thousands of invites going spare for the 'big one'
Microsoft is offering you the chance to sign up to the Xbox Live Update Preview Program and get a look at the 360 dashboard's new features early. Here's how you do it.

MS revealed at E3 that the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm will launch via the 360 Dashboard later this year. Don't expect anything from the Sky deal just yet.

All you have to do is sign up to Microsoft Connect and fill in a survey. Microsoft is looking for as many owners as possible to give feedback. You'll get the nod in around a week if your application is successful. It's all very exciting.

"I am happy to announce that we're doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available," said Major Nelson. "Much like we did last year, you'll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows Live ID that is connected to your Xbox Live Gamertag."

This link is all you need to know.

What's the purpose of being able to "preview early"? I can't think of any benefit to MS unless it contains code they want to test. I'll wait for the proper release, thanks.

To make sure it works, no? If I get in, I'll be trying out Games on Demand first.

I'm assuming it's kind of like a beta for all the last.fm, Facebook and twitter features, all the gubbins that were announced at E3.

I've signed up anyway, so wait and see time.

It is like a beta they done it last year with the NXE

So... a console that's unreliable (3 RRoD's) and a beta firmware.

Match made in heaven that, eh?

Somehow, I think I'll wait for the release.

If it were this then I would be in it for sure but the 3 features you mentioned wont be rolled out just now, that is happening later in the year, unfortunately.

Yayyy NNXE ,i signed up for it ,i hope i get picked but no twitter till l8r in the year or sky :(

A beta isn't always about testing the techincal side of things. It can be about feedback with the interface, features, the whole experience etc.

I signed up, but not that bothered either way. I'm guessing MS will have done plenty of tests before this to check if it somehow overheats the 360 even more.

Then again, most people assumed they wouldn't release a console with a very obvious design flaw.

Signed, baby. Heres hoping I get in.

I've heard MS are looking at all applicants avatars to make sure they adhere to the dress code. Smart-casual, no trainers.

Amazing! When I looked at the T&C's, it was just a photo of a burly bouncer pointing at a sign that simply said 'R.O.A.R.'.

If you don't get on the beta, they'll send you an email saying 'if ya name's not dahhhn, ya not comin' in'.

Do you think they'll let my avatar in with his urban cowboy vibe?

I wouldn't risk it dude. You know how embarrassing it is walking away from the queue while your mates get in!

 They came out of course, but it's still embarrassing being that guy! Best part was I got in ten minutes later by grabbing my jacket and glasses from the car. Considering my hairstyle back then was a flat-top with a step, I can't believe the change was that dramatic!
