Purpose

2004 HandbookThere are many purposes for the assembling of a synod convention beyond the action of voting for elections and acting upon resolutions. A succinct summary of these is offered in Bylaw 3.1.1 of the 2004 Handbook of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, where it is stated that the “national convention of the Synod shall afford an opportunity for worship, nurture, inspiration, fellowship, and the communication of vital information.”

It so often seems that convention discussions are targeted toward the legislative and polity aspects of the convention, thus overshadowing the other equally, if not more important, objectives of the convention process. Yet, there are generally various events and activities planned in the convention program that focus on fulfilling these objectives. Some of the events and activities planned for the 63rd Regular Convention of the LCMS in this regard are highlighted in the linked pages noted above.

As one can surmise from the many events and activities, the convention has purpose far more than voting for elections and acting upon resolutions. Of course, the action of elections and resolution consideration are not forgotten or neglected! As you have chance to participate in any of these opportunities, either in person or via the live Web streams of the convention, you are encouraged to do so. In this manner, it is hoped that you too will have worshipped, been nurtured and inspired, uplifted in fellowship, and have received a little more information about this wonderful church body of which we are privileged to be a part – The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.
