Have you got 'PlayStation palmar hidradenitis'?

British Journal of Dermatology describes new condition caused by gaming
Skin specialists have identified a new skin disorder caused by excessive gaming. And it's called PlayStation palmar hidradenitis. But you CAN get it if you've got an Xbox or Wii...

The condition, which symptoms include sore red lumps on a patient's hands, has been so named in the British Journal of Dermatology. No, seriously.

Doctors who examined a 10-year-old girl in Geneva University Hospital found that she'd developed a condition known as 'idiopathic eccrine hidradenitis' but only on the hands - when it usually affects other areas like the feet, and is linked to heavy exercise and sweating.

When her parents revealed her recent daily bouts of gaming, doctors suspected the problem was caused by "tight and continuous grasping" of the console's controller.

Apparently, she recovered after ten days without playing games. How did they think of that?

"This is an interesting discovery and one that the researchers are keen to share with other dermatologists, should they be confronted with similar, unexplained symptoms in a patient," said Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists.

"If you're worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don't play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating," she added, according to the BBC.

We really did phone our local pharmacy to ask for a cream that'll help with PlayStation palmar hidradenitis. They laughed.

i've been playing games for nearly 3 times the years she's been alive and the only probs i've had are cramp, and sore thumbs. and thats only when i use my Dual Shock3 for extended times i.e. when MGS4 came out, played for about 8 hours non stop. could hardly even skin up after that one.
but must have done the same this weekend on SF4 but thanks to using a hori stick no cramp
possibly gonna happen this weekend again when Killzone 2 comes out. :D

Sometimes i think its the ps3 that is sweating not me, never happens with the 360 or wiimote. Weird!!

PlayStation palmar hidradenitis - do you get that from using 3 generations of the dated DualShock design for the last 11 years? LOL!

Thats why I always slip on the ol' silicone Wii Remote Jacket or 'Wii condom' as i call it, for extra protection!

There's nothing worse that sore, redness from chaffing!

I know exactly what causes that. Nothing to do with gaming, but it does involve excessively playing with yourself...

Here's a thought - maybe the kid plays the console too much. Perhaps she should get a bike and experience the outdoors.

I got some wicked blisters on my thumb from playing 'tap A and B as fast as you can' games and using the slide between them approach.

No it happens when you try multiplayer as well :?

I wonder how much time and money went into this research when just "dry callused skin" would pretty much have covered it.

You get the same thing from riding a bike with rubber handlebar grips too. And hell, my hands got callused to hell learning to play guitar and drums. Pretty sure it'd also apply to excessive mouse users.

It's not the action that is the issue, it's the word "excessive".

...its down to the rubbish ps3 pad.... :D
Posted by Black Mantis
It would be for me anyway, I've never liked it. When I get one I'll be searching the net for a more comfortable joypad.

I've always said ps3 owners are a bunch of wank-rs lol now we have proof. sorry, to hard(no pun intended)to resist

I have to agree with you on this, and if you find a decent ps3 pad let us know.

I've looked around, and i think SAITEK make a controller that you can swap the D-pad and left stick around, but it's wired and has no rumble if used for the ps3, but ok for ps2.

I often spend hours with the 360 pad with no problems, but if i use the ps3 pad i get aches and pains after about 20 mins, there's no excuse for sony not updating their controller after all this time.

Maybe Sony can look up the word ergonomics for the next Playstation eh?

The playstation controller has always caused my hands to ache, from the PS1 up to the PS3, even after short gaming sessions. Its the only thing that prevents me spending more than an 1 hour at a time on it. If they made it a smidge bigger it would be fine, but then there would probably be as many people saying its too big. They can't make a controller that fits into every size hand, unless they made the grip extendable or provided an attachment (no dirty jokes you filthy minded people).

i have a few attachments on my DS3. 2 triggers for the R2 and L2 buttons and caps for the analogue sticks. haven't found a french tickler one yet though

Maybe it doesn't happen with the 360 because there are no 360 games that you would want to play for longer than 10 minutes.

Joypads have left their mark on my hands... which I suppose is fair enough after 20 years of gaming. I have small callouses on my middle and ring fingers, both hands - which are there due to all the time I've spent holding joypads.
I have never experienced any pain from them or from gaming in general though.

I've started getting this quite recently from my 360 pad, mainly on my left hand and predominantly on the top of the thumb and webbing between thumb and index finger and it really can be quite painful.
It's good to know what's causing it finally as I had just assumed it was outgassing or some kind of chemical reaction between my sweat and some material used in the 360 controller and was thinking of getting one of those silicon jackets for it, but I guess that would be a waste of money now.
Very useful article CVG, thanks.

Sweating!? What do they think I am, some kind of ameuter?

I get sore thumbs from playing certain games, like Fifa, or fighting games (from constantly pressing right, being the agressive player I am).

My PS3 has never broken down. Does generate of lot of heat though, which can make me sweat.

Maybeee I should stop playing games 6 inches away from it.

Just had a 4 hour session on StreetFighter4 with the ps3 joypad-no problems!

all you people that are bitching about the ps3 pad can **** off, since you didn't seem to mind it when it was on the PS1 and 2. 360 has the same controller as the xbox, no-one complains there. The ps3 pad isn't shit, I can play games for a long time comfortably, and PS3 pad is fine. get you tongues out of microsofts fat american ass and stop bitching because you can't afford a decent console!

It sounds like something ive got on my hands, its not sore or anything.

I play videogames so much i have callouses. My hands look like the belong to a 60 year old blacksmith.

Says who? I've always found the PS controller an uncomfortable bugger to use.

How long before WASD's Claw becomes a medical condition?
Posted by davidc
randychimp....

i'm no fanboy..i have both systems and the 360 pad is much better than the ps3's....

especially for FPS.....

most people i know that have both sytems agree.

couldn't they have called it sore gaming thumbs/fingers (SGT/SGF)? why the convoluted name?
Posted by ensabahnur
ok where to start? the left analogue stick should be where the dpad is, the curved inwards r2 and l2 buttons are too easy for your fingers to slip off, its too easy for your thumb to slip off the analogue stick due to no indent and the thing gives me cramp after a few hours use. ok a few of these probs can be sorted out with attachments.
the fact is they said they were gonna redesign it and even showed us mock ups, i would have happily tried the boomerang thing they had.
and how the hell can we be bitching about the pad we use when according to you we cant even afford the console. maybe you should get your head out of sony's ass.
