I'd love to have the Shinobi collection and the arcade originals of Yu Suzuki's games on my hard drive. I'd even pay 400 points for each of them. But this compilation is certainly not 'ultimate'. No online play, no leaderboards, missing classics, and having to put the disc in the drive for a quick blast of Sonic? No thanks Sega. You've disappointed me yet again. sounds bad.
crude stretching and smoothing over. no thanks. stop milking these games once and for all!!
get a proper HD reworking, or full blown sequels to sonic (2.5D like SF4) and streets of rage. a new shinobi wouldnt go a miss either, and probably would be the most interesting sequel. Why are people paying for this?
Only and idiot would pay for these games.
You will play each one for a few minutes then go back to playing todays, better games haha quite true.
you probably wouldnt even play half of them at all. Yeah, especially when you can download half of these games for free from the internet.
Man, they didn't even include Lion King!
Great shame. I'd rather they did a Saturn collection or a dreamcast selection than old Megadrive games. I'm tempted to get this but there's so much else out there to play at the moment. Been looking forward to this since it was announced, for £25 for me is good value. I recently had to sell many old systems with many of these games and to have them all on one disk for me is a good thing. Newer ≠ Better. Aladdin Alien 3 Another World Castle of Illusion Chuck Rock Gods James Pond II: Robocod Lemmings Puggsy Quackshot Virtua Racing Wiz n Liz World of Illusion
None of these games? They're really pushing it with the 'Ultimate' description (in fact it's a lie as far as my tastes are concerned) although, to many Xbox 360 and PS3 owners, I suspect that the loss of some of the platform games won't matter too much to them. Was it my imagination or did the Original advert for this clearly show the Virtua Racing logo? I'm sure they've changed it?!
The lack of online play is a bit pants though, considering the Sega Classics releases on XBLA do have online play. I'll stick with my SoR2 and Golden Axe on there I think! The same old titles on a mega drive compilation about time they did release some of the games the reviewer and other posters have mentioned. Stop keep charging people for the same old titles again and again and release a different compilation for once.
I like the idea of the saturn/DC compilation as mentioned above. what!!!! no revenge of shinobi!!! what i dont get is i had a dvd full of megadrive games (which you can get off the net for free now) http://www.romnation.net
a few years back with at least 100 games on. blue ray disc anybody? how many gig anybody? i just downloaded zaxxon to see how big it was (and i never realised it was released for the megadrive) and it's 842kb. 3 second download, emu loaded and off I go. i think they could fit the entire catalogue on one disk. or are they preparing the suckers for ULTIMATE MEGADRIVE COLLECTION 2  I personally can't wait for the Ultimate Mega Drive Collection 2, with all the best games that they left out of this 'ultimate' collection. Maybe they should look up the meaning of the word? My pick wouyld be Desert Storm, Zombies ate my neighbors, Ghostbusters, Brian Lara Cricket, Fifa '95... Wow, no Sonic 3 & Knuckles? What were they thinking?
Aladin Castle of Illusion S3&K
All must have titles. They should be dissapointed with themselves. I know releasing a sequel will get them more cash, but im sure more people would have bought this initial edition if they had just included every Mega Drive game ever on it. All you do is nothing but complain. Don't you ever get tired?
It's a good collection if a parent has a kid who owns a 360 or PS3, because most of these games are still more than playable. Heck, I may even pick it up at some point when it's really cheap. neat idea....but it needs to be £20 tops and...where's the shooters - Thunderforce, Battle Squadron, Midnight Resistance etc
and streetfighter2 and mortal kombat.....tut tut I know it's not technically megadrive, but yet again Sega miss an opportunity to include Sonic CD, arguably the best Sonic game of all time.
Let's face, it no-one's going to release an ultimate mega CD compilation, (because most of the games sucked), so why not put Sonic CD out in a collection like this? the games get boring after a few minutes. dont kid yourselves.
its like saying an old banger metro is great because you once owned one. Good call mate! I'm glad I'm not the only Battle Squadron fan out there! The Amiga Version was just a smidge better simply for Audio reasons, but it's one of the most satisfying feeling shooters ever made. Would love to see a next gen remake of that!
What some poeple are failing to see though, is that this is a collection of Sega Published titles only, so Desert Strike, Fifa 95 etc. are not going to get in.
Revenge of Shinobi, Castle of Illusion, Shadow Dancer, AfterBurner 2, ThunderForce(III & IV) and Gunstar Heros are tragic omissions though. Downers It's not the ultimate collection No Sonic 3 & Knuckles is unforgivable Online features next time, please?
Your list states Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles is in there...?
No Outrun = no good. Orochiguyver - Sonic 3 is in there. Sonic & Knuckles is in there. Sonic 3 & Knuckles isn't. Read the review properly :p
And for those saying you'll get bored after 20 minutes... well, some of you might, if you have the attention span of a dying goldfish maybe. But some (not all) of these games are classics that still hold their appeal; I still slot my PSP Megadrive collection in and give some of the games a whirl. I put down my money on this purely for Shining Force 1 and 2 and the Phantasy Star games. You won't find copies of all of those games for megadrive for £100 let alone just the £25 for this compilation.
This alone makes the collection great value for money!
You can bicker about what should be on an "ultimate" collection but really it's just a name, get over it and appreciate what's there. It's a good list of games. I think it's a pretty good collection, I for one have bought it. I played some of the original games back when I had my Mega Drive and to be honest I don't think these games need achievements, I've already got Golden Axe / Streets of Rage / Sonic 1 and 2 on the XBLA, so I doubt I'll be playing those much on this disc, but the rest will be getting some serious game time.
There are a lot missing to make it ultimate, but for version one (come on there will be another if this sells) it's a pretty descent list of games.
I'm looking forward to getting down to playing them all, but first I have about a dozen games still to play after the Christmas rush  Bollocks to everyone complaining about certain omissions! Speciala - you can lick my arse.
It's certainly an attractive line-up of games - I'd say around 25 of the games still hold up. Games like Altered Beast and Golden Axe were always rubbish though.
Nontheless, classics like Dynamite Headdy, Streets of Rage 3 and Ristar make this absolutley essential. **** off Sonic CD was part of the 'Sonic GEMS Collection', released in 2005 on the Gamecube, Xbox and PS2.
I sadly have never owned or played Sonic CD yet. lol does anyone actually realise that EA among others will charge sega if they include there mega drive games on a disk, secondly downloading an emu and running the games on your pc isnt exactly legal is it. to be fair though if sega put all these games on the market place to buy all of them would cost £180 (16000ms points) so basicly this is a pretty good deal. if your not a retro fan then it shows by anyone saying they would prefer to play todays offerings than play some old games that are actually a lot harder to complete than todays games. just 1 last thing would you realy love to play your mega drive on your hd tv (just hook up a ps1 to a hd tv it looks shite) compared to playing the games on a hd console so thae game look reasonable rather than shite go on the choice is yours. Nonsense. Sonic or Sonic 2 is still as much fun as it was back when I was kid.
And your car analogy is poor. Metro's were always rubbish. A Golf Gti, now there's a car that's still great and can keep up with the current Gti. I was going to pick this up when I went to buy Street Fighter today, despite still having a Mega Drive hooked up and just under half of the games in original cartridge form... but they were trying to charge €40 for it! Not a chance. I'll be holding out until it's much cheaper.
EDIT: Also, I agree with Crow. These games are as good as they ever were. That's why my Mega Drive is still played just as much as my PS3, maybe even moreso. I bought this collection yesterday. I can understand why some of these games that people have metioned have been missed out, SEGA may not have the licence for these games anymore. Still would have been nice to play Gunstar Heroes again :D Cool Spot was also another great game. Although multi-format games tended to look and sound better on the SNES, the Megadrive actually had a faster processor, hence why games like Sonic the hedgehog were possible. |
