Social Security Death Index
If you don't find your grandparents, try a sister or brother to obtain their Social Security application. If the application is completed fully, you will learn when they were born, where and their parents names. It costs $27.00 to order the application and $29.00 if you do not have the Social Security #. Do not order the computerized version. It will not give you the parents names or place of birth of the applicant. Although this site is no longer maintained, I like it the best. You can use just one field in it to find records. If you have a SS # or just a date of death, date of birth, or just a year, you can use this site. I believe maintenanc of it stopped about 2001. I have a friend, who was not able to find her husband's record. We found it just using his SS#.
