FOR RESEARCH TIPS

Go to the Learning to Research page

These are research tips mostly for those researching Polish ancestry. Some of the ideas on how to research in Eastern Europe do apply to those researching in other countries.

This website has been designed to assist those searching for family in and along the borders of Poland who belong to the Poland Border Surnames Mail List through Rootsweb, whose homepage is located at http://www.Rootsweb.com.

Anyone wishing to learn how to do genealogical research in the areas of Eastern Europe that are described below is welcome to join the mail list.

We hope that this website will help you with your research!

DESCRIPTION OF MAIL LIST

PolandBorderSurnames - A surname-based mail list for those researching genealogy in the former historical borders of Poland including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Moravia, Hungary, Russia, the Balkans, and East Prussia.

WE DO NOT PERFORM PERSONAL RESEARCH AND WE CANNOT PERSONALLY ASSIST YOU IN FINDING YOUR ANCESTORS. Members of the mail list will give you tips based on how they have been able to refine their research techniques.

Our goal is to help you learn how to research on your own. Members of the mail list will help you learn how to research. (See "How To Subscribe," below.) After subscribing to the mail list, you will need to provide as much information as possible in your post to the list so that members can guide you:

*Names of your Known Ancestors
*Dates of Events
*Places of Events
*Religion
*Names of Siblings and their spouses, if known.

Without this information, there's not much a list member can do to help you. Members of this mail list are not professional researchers. They are learning how to research. As they learn, they teach others how to research.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE...

To subscribe, send the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a message to polandbordersurnames-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or polandbordersurnames-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode).

Submissions should include your full name (first and last name), the surnames you are researching in all caps, any dates and locations you know of, and the religion practiced by your ancestors, if known. The mailing address for postings is polandbordersurnames-l@rootsweb.com.

You must be a member of the mail list before the computer will accept an inquiry from you. Once you send your request to become a member of the mail list, please wait for the letter from Rootsweb that acknowledges you are a member of the mail list before sending any letters to the list. If the computer has not acknowledged you, your mail will bounce into our administration mailbox for sorting. This causes a delay in your receiving a reply. There are many letters sent here daily.

Please take the time to read the universal rules on "NETIQUETTE." These are quidelines on the do's and don'ts of online communication. The rules are at this site: Netiquette

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE...

When you are ready to unsubscribe from the mail list, follow the above directions with one exception. Instead of typing the word "subscribe" in the body of the letter, type the word "unsubscribe" in the body of the letter, with no quotation marks, please. If you use the quotation marks, your request to unsubscribe from the list will not be processed by the computer. It's very sensitive as it has been programmed to accept messages to subscribe and unsubscribe in a specific format. Thank you.

IF YOU NEED HELP...

If you have any problems joining the list, please feel free to contact Tina Ellis. I will be happy to assist you.

If you need any help using the Poland Border Surnames website, please contact Catherine Brewster

GUIDELINES FOR MAILING LIST

Some people seem to think these quidelines are negative in nature. It has been suggested to link them to another site, which can be read. Having had this mail list for over five years, we have learned people will not read everything. They tend to be anxious to get started on their research. We understand that, so our hope is that you will take the time to read the guidelines, and will not succumb to the usual pitfalls of errors new members tend to make. Most of these guidelines were set up years ago when Rootsweb.com first began using mail lists as a tool to help genealogy researchers. A few have been added as they are unique errors to our list. Thank you very much for following them.

Do not send spam e-mail messages to mailing lists.

Do not send attachments (attached files) of any sort to mailing lists. This includes URL shortcuts, v-cards, GEDCOM files, zipped files, and any other type of attachment.

Do not forward virus warnings or hoaxes, jokes or chain letters to mailing lists.

Do not use HTML or RTF (rich text format) in messages sent to mailing lists.

Do not cross-post messages to multiple mailing lists on the "To:" line or the "cc:" line of the e-mail message.

Do not send e-mail messages to mailing lists for which the topic is inappropriate. Please keep topics inline with genealogical research.

ALWAYS place the subject of your e-mail in the subject line!

Do not start a "ROLL CALL" on the mail list. We have a "special" place to list our SURNAMES on the MEMBER SURNAMES page. If you wish to have surnames listed on the Member Surnames pages send them to Catherine Brewster. One message with all of the SURNAMES you wish to list and your full name (first and last name) as you wish to have it listed is sufficient. No queries will be answered from this address. Send queries to PolandBorderSurnames-L@rootsweb.com after you join the mail list.

Do NOT flame other members of the mailing list. To flame someone means to get nasty with someone, or argue a point of view.

Please do not register complaints over the mail list. They should be sent to Tina Ellis. All complaints will be acknowledged.

Above all, please be nice to one another. Remember that members of the list may be cousins. If you are nasty to the wrong person, you may lose an opportunity of having a cousin to help you connect as a member of "your" family. Do not use terminology which may be considered to be an ethnic slur. The atrocities of WWII are not to be discussed on this list. There does not seem to be any way to discuss them without people getting emotionally upset and misunderstood.

To learn more about using mail lists in your genealogical research, go to our Research Tips page and click on "Mail Lists" in the left hand column.
Have a nice day. ;->
