HOW TO FIGURE A BIRTHDATE

Suppose the person died May 6, 1889, at the age of 71 years, 7 months, 9 days.

1. Write the year, month, day as: -----------> 18890506
2. Subtract the age at death: ----------------> 710709
3. This gives the figure: -------------------> 18179797
4. Now subtract 8870: --------------------------> 8870
5. The result is: --------------------------> 18170927

Year 1817, 9th month (Sept), 27th day or 27 Sept, 1817

How to Start My Search for Ancestors?

HOW TO USE JEWISHGEN’S SHTETLSEEKER TO FIND YOUR TOWNS
(reprinted with permission from contact Joanna Polanski) Thank you Joanna.

Go to this internet site: ShtetlSeeker

Enter the name of the city/village/town you are searching for.
Select the Country in the browse box (Poland, Ukraine, etc.).
Select whether you do or do not have Multilingual support on your computer.
Press search.

Find: Example: Suwalki 5406 2256 N Poland 150.7 miles NNE of Warsaw.
Click on the coordinates to go to MAPQUEST where you can get a map of Suwalki that is printable. You will have to play with the zoom in/zoom out features to find a map that suits your needs.

OR you could write down the coordinates and continue on.

Press "Back"
Clear the spaces.
Enter the lat/long which would be: 54 06 22 56.
Put your cursor in the first box, then type in the number of degrees "54."
Now press your TAB key to get to the next box for the number of minutes North "06."
Tab to the next for the degrees "22' and minutes "56" EAST.
Click on the underline phrase "distance."
Select 30 miles on the browse box for distance. Recognize this changes "the miles from Warsaw" to "the miles from the town coordinates you entered." In this case miles from Suwalki.

NOTE: If you are confident of the first letter of the name of the Village, you could limit your search by entering the first letter into the "Search for towns that begin with" box.. For example, "H."

Click on search.
You will find a list of all towns beginning with the letter "H" that "have been listed with this Shtetl site" and that are within the 30 miles radius.

You have found:
Hultajewo 5416 2258 N Poland 11.6 miles N. Click on the coordinates to access a map through MAPQUEST.

NOW go "Back" and put in the letter "P." Press search and you will find:
Podsumowo 5416 2258 N Poland 11.6 miles N
Podmacharce 5358 2313 N Poland 14.7 miles SE
Podumbyay 5402 2339 V Lithuania 29.4 miles E

By clicking on the coordinates you will find access through MAPQUEST to maps of the area you chose.
By zooming in you may find what route it is near to. By zooming out you find what other larger towns it is near.

SAVE these instructions and you can go here anytime and work the site yourself. Don't forget to mark the original address to your favorite list.

This is a great source and one does not have to be researching Jewish ancestry to benefit from the work that has been done here.
