The 40 class was the first mainline diesel-electric loco in NSW. They began with mainline services, but later worked on passenger services. One problem was the A1A-A1A axle arrangement, this causing wheel wear. Later on, two units were sold to Robe River for construction work.

Robe River:
Once bought by Robe River, these two locos were converted to a Bo-Bo wheel arrangment (to improve their performance) before being used for construction work on the Pannawonica line, as well as shunting, for a while.
