One short day after the Rangers parted ways with Jaromir Jagr, the 36-year-old wing signed a two-year deal with a Russian team. Jagr's deal with Avangard Omsk, part of the Continental Hockey League (KSL), is reportedly worth $7 million a year. The KHL starts its inaugural season later this year and will likely compete with the NHL for European and Russian talent.......

For many people, the best part about watching hockey is the fights. For those fight-lovers, there's some rumbling between the Rangers and the National Hockey League that could interest you. Back in September, Madison Square Garden sued the NHL for antitrust violations, claiming the league monopolized team promotions via the Rangers' website. Court papers filed yesterday included a letter from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman that asked the court to rule that the Rangers were in......

Rangers 4, Sabres 3: Not only did the Rangers exact some revenge for their defeat in last season's playoffs, but they improved their chances of qualifying for this postseason. Sean Avery broke a third-period tie and put the Rangers two points ahead of the Sabres in the race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Jaromir Jagr, Brandon and Nigel Dawes also scored for the Rangers, who have picked up points in their last......

Thrashers 4, Devils 3 (SO): John Madden put the Devils up a goal with 8:45 remaining, but with 18 seconds to go, Atlanta's Marian Hossa got the equalizer. The teams went 10 rounds in a shootout before the Thrashers emerged on top. Eighteen seconds away from two points, and instead the Devils settle for one. This was the second straight overtime game for the Devils, who also play Saturday. Martin Brodeur, who has made 17......

Knicks 105, Wizards 93:The last time the Knicks won two games in a row, the TV writers' strike was only two weeks old. And this game came against a team that wasn't playing its fourth game in five nights. After jumping out to a quick first-half lead, the Knicks gave much of it back before recovering. Jamal Crawford had 29 points, including 6-of-7 shooting from 3-point land, but did see his free-throw streak come to......

Nets 96, Magic 95: Vince Carter won this game with two clutch free throws at the end, but it was former Magic Darrell Armstrong who provided the biggest of several sparks off the bench. He had 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and a critical hand on defense during Orlando's last possession. The Nets outscored the Magic, 31-18, in the fourth quarter and have now won five of six games. If they keep this up,......

76ers 101, Knicks 90: Under most circumstances, losing to one of the worst teams in the NBA would be of concern to the Knicks. But with the death of guard Stephon Marbury's father, it doesn't seem so bad. Marbury played for the first half and scored two points but didn't come back out for the second half. Jamal Crawford had his second straight excellent game, but the Knicks frontcourt couldn't contain Samuel Delambert. The two......

Knicks 100, Nets 93: No Stephon Marbury, and the Knicks take down the Nets. Of course, the Nets didn't have Jason Kidd (headache), so who knows which team was worse off. Richard Jefferson's heroics couldn't get the job done for the Nets, who continue to play inexplicably poorly at home following road games. Jamal Crawford filled the backcourt "void" for the Knicks with 29 points, and Zach Randolph had 25. Richard Jefferson had 31 points......

Devils 3, Thrashers 0: Martin Brodeur earned his first shutout of the season -- and the 93rd of his career -- and the Devils are at .500 again. Rod Pelley and Paul Martin had the two non-empty-net goals for the Devils. Jamie Langenbrunner tied an NHL record by assisting on all of his team's goals. After that early-season road trip, the Devils appear to have their skates back under them. Panthers 3, Rangers 2 (SO):......

If CBS News Writers Strike, Democrats Will Nix Debate Several presidential candidates - Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Bill Richardson -have announced their intentions not to cross picket lines for a debate sponsored by CBS News on December 10th. The Writers Guild of America announced earlier this week that its members who work for the network’s television and radio operations at both the national and local level have authorized a strike vote. The members have......

Rangers 4 Philadelphia 3 (Shootout): The Rangers have overcome their slow start and moved into a tie for first place. Brendan Shanahan had a goal in regulation and the game-winner in the shootout to power New York. Henrik Lundqvist kept the Flyers off the board in the shootout, stopping all three shots he faced. Marc Staal played another solid game paired with Rozsival and Marek Malik has to be worried about regaining his starting spot.......

Mark Messier will forever be remembered for delivering the Stanley Cup to the Rangers in 1994, his famous guarantee before Game Six of the Eastern Conference Finals that year and a tendency to cry in public. The captain had his number retired by both Edmonton and New York and is the only player ever to captain two teams to a Stanley Cup victory and he was second all-time in points scored in NHL history. Scott......

Rangers 4 Pittsburgh 2: That’s not a misprint, the Rangers really scored four goals tonight. Scott Gomez got things started for New York with a goal 7:35 into the game. But, Pittsburgh came right back and tied things on a Sergei Gonchar slap shot. But, Sean Avery did what he does best, get under opponents’ skin and he goaded Gary Roberts into a double minor. Roberts should know better and his mistake setup Michal Rozsival’s......

Ottawa 4 New Jersey 1: It’s been 25 years since the original Colorado Rockies moved to New Jersey and Wayne Gretzky called them a “Mickey Mouse organization”. That team struggled to establish an identity in an area with a historic franchise and, at the time, a franchise that was the best in the NHL, but they managed a 3-3 tie in their first game in their new building. The current Devils are one of the......

You may not have noticed that the NHL season started last weekend. While two games between two California teams in London may not have captured your interest, the three local teams that begin play tomorrow and the next few nights will all be fascinating stories throughout the season. No team enters the season with bigger expectations than the Rangers. After landing two big centers in free agency, Chris Drury and Scott Gomez, New York......

The Yankees don't talk about new contracts with their players during the season. That was their policy with Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, and with Alex Rodriguez. At least before the season started. What a difference a half season makes because the Yankees have changed the policy for their All-Star third baseman. The team hopes to meet with A-Rod's agent Scott Boras in the next few weeks to discuss an extension. Rodriguez currently has three years......

The 2007 class for the Hockey Hall of Fame was announced yesterday, and Mark Messier and Scott Stevens were both on the list. Messier, the former Rangers captain, and 2nd on the NHL's all-time point list behind Wayne Gretzky, helped the Rangers end their 54-year Stanley Cup drought in 1994. In addition to winning the Cup with the Rangers, Messier won five championships with the Edmonton Oilers. Stevens helped lead the Devils to three Stanley......

Sabres 5 Rangers 4: In the end they just didn’t have enough to win. That’s not an indictment of the Rangers, far from it since Buffalo is the best team in the league, just the reality. They gave their all on Sunday, but couldn’t come up with an answer to the Sabres’ speed. Now they face a huge offseason. They are close to being in the elite of the NHL and with some minor tweaks,......

Senators 3, Devils 2: Scott Gomez's pair of goals couldn't save the Devils, who went out of the NHL Playoffs with a whimper by losing the conference semifinals series in five games. New Jersey just couldn't light the lamp enough in this series, and Martin Brodeur wasn't the best netminder. That title belongs to Ray Emery, who made 27 saves Saturday despite being in a car accident the day before. Ask any Devils fan if......

Rangers 2 Buffalo 1 (2 OT’s): If you aren’t a hockey fan this is the type of game that could make you one. For over ninety minutes of action, both teams gave everything they had expending every ounce of effort they possessed in a desperate battle. The Rangers had to win the game, or face elimination on Tuesday. Buffalo sought a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. New York took an early 1-0 and seemed......

For some inexplicable reason, the NHL has scheduled all three local clubs to start their playoff chase tonight and to overlap with each other most nights. Because of that, fans of the various teams should get to know this website to figure out where they can watch the games. As for the actual series, the Islanders have clearly drawn the toughest test. Buffalo started out the season on fire and hasn’t let up, earning the......

Yankees 10, Orioles 7: Yeah, you read the headline right. Alex Rodriguez came through in yesterday afternoon's game in the biggest way - with a two-out game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the 9th inning. It was his 2nd home run of the game. The bottom of the ninth inning went something like this: out, out, Robinson Cano single, Derek Jeter walk, Bobby Abreu hit-by-pitch, grand slam by Rodriguez into the black seats. Kei......

Knicks 97, Cavaliers 93: Eddy Curry, who has shown the Knicks nothing over the past two weeks, scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to help lead a comeback win over the Cavs. This may be a case of a day late and a dollar short, though. The Knicks remain two games behind the Nets for the final playoff spot, and they'll each play 12 more games. New York would also have......

Raptors 104, Knicks 94: Losing to the Raptors while T.J. Ford and Chris Bosh run wild isn't that bad. But the Knicks did that while making the frontcourt of Jorge Garbajosa and Andrea Bargnani look like twin towers north of the border on Wednesday. Their ability to defend the two foreign big men no doubt would have been helped if David Lee, out three to four weeks with an ankle injury, had been on the......

Rangers 2, Hurricanes 1 (SO): This game was doubly delicious for the Rangers, who won and moved into a tie with the Hurricanes for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Even though Jaromir Jagr doesn't like shootouts, he's got to like the way the Rangers have played this week. With the exception of Saturday's stinker against Pittsburgh, the Rangers performed well over their last four games. They've gone 3-0-1, and all......

For his actions in last night's Rangers-Islanders game, Islanders forward Chris Simon was suspended indefinitely today by the NHL. In the 3rd period of the game, a Rangers victory, Simon was checked cleanly into the boards by Hollweg. After recovering, Simon used his stick on Hollweg to retaliate - hitting Hollweg on the chin and knocking the Rangers center to the ice. After the hit, Hollweg laid motionless on the ice. He would later......

Rangers 2 Islanders 1: Why did he do it? He had to know how important this game was and he had to know this wasn’t the time to take a penalty. So, why did Chris Simon decide to take a total cheap shot against Ryan Hollweg? Was it because Hollweg had checked him, cleanly we should note, into the boards? Was it because he has always been willing to mix it up in his career?......

Jazz 104, Knicks 102 (OT): It was a chance for the Knicks to get their 23rd win last night, matching their season total for last year. Unfortunatly, 22 turnovers and Mehmet Okur got the best of them. Despite having a 10-point lead with 5:03 left in the 4th quarter, the Jazz forced overtime. Quentin Richardson tied the game for the Knicks with 22 seconds remaining in OT, but the Jazz scored on a back door......

Apparently, Jim Dolan is pretty happy with the way things are going with the Knicks. That’s the only conclusion you can reach after reading the piece on him in this week’s Sports Illustrated. It provides a great profile of just how volatile a person Dolan is. From berating people for trivial things, to making sure that they know he is the boss, Dolan comes across as a man so insecure in himself that he must......

Nets 112, Nuggets 102: No NBA regular-season game should be billed as a must-win, but Saturday's victory in Denver could prove to be the most important game this season for the Nets. As much as they hate to admit it, when they need to win, they rely on Vince Carter, who scored 40 points. Bostjan Nachbar's 22 went in the pleasant-surprise department, which also included this win on the heels of three heartbreaking losses. Rangers......
