In addition to providing instruction through appointments with tutors in the Centre and through the Internet, Language Across the Curriculum also runs several courses in written and oral communication for students in Engineering and Applied Sciences. We also help administer and provide instruction for writing assignments in certain Engineering and Applied Science courses, some of which we provide web-pages for.

Courses:

Oral Communication Workshop: A four-week workshop aimed at building your skill and confidence in Oral Presentations through practice in a low-key non-pressured atmosphere.
Through a series of practice talks, from short informal, impromptus, to brief prepared presentations on subjects pertinent to the speaker’s area of specialization, students will gain ease in speaking spontaneously or from notes.

Professional Writing Workshop for Engineers (3rd and 4th year students only): This seminar is a six-week course designed to help students improve their written communication skills in preparation for thesis writing, PEY, graduate school and job applications, and for the realities of communication in the professional world.

JDE1001Y: Communication for Engineers (Graduate students only): The course helps graduate students improve their communication skills. After an introductory meeting the course is taught in three eight-week units covering related areas of communication.  Together, the segments provide a comprehensive treatment of communication in engineering. The division into segments allows for small sections and significant instructor feedback at an  appropriate level.

ESC300: Written and Oral Communication (required for 3rd year Engineering Science students): This is a course in the theory and practice of engineering communication. This course is intended to deepen your understanding of communication principles through selected readings, in-class writing workshops and oral presentations.  [Site opens in new window]

Assignments:

ECE 110: Electrical and Computer Engineering Short Report: This set of web-pages has been designed specifically to assist students of ECE 110, Spring 2001, develop their outlines into final reports. They function as a more detailed supplement to the personal comments returned with the marked outlines, and are to be used in conjunction with those comments.

ECE496Y: Design Project Course Resources: This web page contains resources for students in ECE 496, including an appointment schedule for group meetings with ECC tutors, directions to information on how to write proposals, progress and interim reports, and tips on oral communication. *Currently in development: see Handbook pages on proposals, oral presentations, etc. for help on individual aspects of the project until the page is uploaded, as well as this guide to general manuscript preparation (pdf).
