Kings 4, Rangers 2: Sometimes teams have quality efforts and still lose. That's what the Rangers put forth Tuesday. They had 41 shots on goal -- including 24 in the second period alone -- but only got two by Jason LaBarbera. Henrik Lundqvist wasn't at his best, and that didn't help. The Rangers had won three straight and five of six, but don't view this as a step backward. They still seem to be headed......

Jazz 100, Knicks 89: In a departure from their behavior in Tuesday's loss to the Lakers, the Knicks didn't have a lead to squander in this one. They have lost the first three games of this five-game swing against playoff-caliber teams from the Western Conference. Their strategy -- let Jamal Crawford shoot as much as possible -- doesn't seem to be working. They couldn't play defense and fell victim to Utah's. To have 19 turnovers......

Nets 87, Bucks 80: For one night at least, Jason Kidd did his best to help the Nets get maximum value in a trade. The Nets also proved that even they couldn't find a way to lose a weak team playing without its best player (Michael Redd). The fans cheered loudly for Kidd before the game, so they either want him gone -- and are cheering his efforts to leave -- or love him so......

Jason Kidd trade rumors are hardly new, but this time, they're probably for real. Nets President Rod Thorn and the guard have made no secret of the seemingly obvious incentives for both parties to want a deal before the Feb. 21 NBA trading deadline. Richard Jefferson and Vince Carter, the younger parts of the Big Three, have expensive contracts. Kidd has had enough of playing well for a team that is inconsistent at best and......

Some L.A. Lakers fan (we assume) came up with a brilliant plan to psych out Phoenix Suns guard Leandro Barbosa last week. Barbosa fell victim to a hoax where his hotel gave him a message saying that Suns GM Steve Kerr wanted to meet him to discuss a trade to the New York Knicks. Jeez, that's maybe the meanest prank call we've ever heard! The Brazilian player sought out assistant coach and mentor Dan D'Antoni......

Lakers 95 Knicks 90: The light bulb has finally gone on for Isiah and he admitted after the game that “maybe we have the wrong guys starting right now.” Why it took this long to click is another question, but Sunday offered definitive proof that changes in the lineup need to be made. The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit......

Stars 3, Rangers 2: What good is outshooting the opponent 41-18 if it doesn't lead to a win? That's what the Rangers have to ask themselves after Sunday's disappointing loss to the Stars. No matter how this game is measured -- except for the score that is -- the Rangers appeared to outplay the Stars. Mike Smith repeatedly stifled the Blueshirts' attack, however, and goals from Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan didn't end up as......

With Kobe Bryant's trade demands in and out of the news, Gothamist wonders what Isiah Thomas would give up to put Bryant in a Knicks uniform. If you follow basketball, you know that Kobe has on again, off again, on again trade demands, and there's a video being shopped around where Kobe says some disparaging words about Lakers management and Andrew Bynum. The Lakers say that they won't be trading Kobe - and why would......

Seattlest has a talk with the photographer from last week's "Segway Mom" and then experiences some dissension in the ranks over the question of wine vs. beer. It's not West Side Story, but about as close as they'll get. They're also still waiting on some inbox relief after a spammer is arrested. As Chicagoist counts down the days to its third anniversary party, they found all-organic pizza to be underwhelming amidst the hoopla, tried......

Knicks 107, Lakers 106:Well, that didn't take long. The Knicks have reached 23 wins -- matching last season's win total -- by defeating the Lakers (only their 7th loss at home this season) and sweeping the season series. Although Kobe Bryant was suspended for the Lakers for the matchup at the Garden but scored 31 on Tuesday night. The game-winning basket came after a missed 3-pointer and an offensive rebound. Jamal Crawford, who led the......

Bobcats 104, Knicks 87: Nothing follows up a win over the Lakers like a no-show against the last-place Bobcats. For 11 minutes between the third and then the fourth quarter, the Knicks didn't score a field goal. That won't get the job done. Jamal Crawford scored 28, and the Knicks did manage to trim a 15-point lead to a four-point one before taking their nap. Wouldn't it be great if the Knicks just didn't fall......

Knicks 99 Lakers 94: Once again the Knicks showed the inability to take care of the basketball, but with Kobe Bryant suspended, the Lakers couldn’t take advantage. New York committed 21 turnovers, but enjoyed a 48-33 rebounding advantage and put also held LA to .44% from the field. Jared Jeffries was back in the starting lineup and responded with 14 points while Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury added 27 and 22 points apiece. Atlanta 5......

Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: an amputation on the Van Wyck, a jumper down in Coney Island, and an off-duty Corrections officer shot in Bed-Stuy. The Lakers may be in town, but Kobe can't play! Bryant is suspended for hitting Manu Ginobili on Sunday, but we think the Knicks will choke. For the first time in 12 years, the city is going to be giving out new Section-8 housing vouchers to non-emergency applicants. The......

Knicks 103, Bulls 92: So much for the Knicks' home-court woes. They beat Utah on Monday, squeaked by lowly Charlotte on Wednesday and tripped up streaking Chicago on Friday. A pair of ex-Bulls pitched in. Jamal Crawford netted 28, and Eddy Curry scored 20. Suddenly, New York's won three in a row. Last Saturday's brawl probably isn't as much to credit as people might think, but if that's the reason for their streak, the success......

Gothamist would expect Chicago area sports teams to wear special green uniforms just because it's a city that dumps green dye into their river (our rivers can be greenish, thanks to other factors). But when we were checking out the Knicks' website, we learned that the Knicks will wear green uniforms for the first time, thanks to special sponsor, Tourism Island. And while Gothamist thinks this is lame, we understand why the Knicks undertook the......

When Phil Jackson retired from coaching the Lakers after the 2004 season he didn’t have a lot of positive things to say about Kobe Bryant calling him selfish among other things. Bryant chafed at playing within Jackson’s offense when Shaquile O’Neal was the primary option. A year apart obviously changed both of them as Bryant now shoots when he wants to, 36 times last night, and Jackson seems content to take his ten million dollars......

Larry Brown still longs for his first win as the head coach of the New York Knicks. At 0-5, it would be nice if that win would come sooner than later. Last night, the Knicks came mighty close against the Golden State Warriors, but lost the game in the final minute, 86-84. Despite the fact that the Knicks came out to play in the first quarter (ha, we're so funny), ending the first period of......

While the Knicks lost last night's game by 18 points, they wake up with a real sense of relief this morning. Reggie Miller, the skinny, gawky perennial clutch shooter for the Indiana Pacers, has played his final game at MSG. While Reggie had a rough shooting night (13 points), teammate and fan-puncher Stephen Jackson picked up the slack with 33 points to lead Indiana to a win. Miller was booed during introductions, but the crowd......

After two disappointing losses on Saturday, hopes of a NY-area team making the NBA playoffs are looking fairly grim. The Knicks stand 5 1/2 games out of a playoff spot with just 12 left to play, while the Nets are a (somewhat) more manageable 3 1/2 games back. Current #7 and #8 East seeds Indiana and Philadelphia have played with serious heart in the last week, notching wins against the likes of the Spurs,......

After weeks of heartbreaking losses, the Knicks are starting to turn it around. They won games with Philly and Indiana last week, and continued the streak with an OT victory against the LA Lakers last night at MSG. Despite blowing a 12-point lead in the final 2 minutes, the Knicks rallied and actually pulled one out at the end. Tim Thomas led the charge with 35 points, and (perhaps for the only time this year)......

Late Friday, the Nets and Toronto Raptors agreed to a trade that brings Vince Carter to the Nets and ships Alonzo Mourning, Eric Williams, Aaron Williams and two first-round draft picks north of the border. Carter has been out with an injured achilles since early December, but the Nets anticipate his return this week. In a question that Gothamist seems to be asking too often these days, did the Nets (in this case) give up......

Apparently Carmelo Anthony spoke too soon. The US Men's Olympic Basketball team was trounced earlier today by "European powerhouse" Italy. Just a week after Anthony, the youngest member of Team USA declared "We're guaranteeing a gold medal. We're bringing it back," the US suffered their worst exhibition loss since the NBA started sending players to the Olympics in 1992. Italy trounced the US 95-78 and the game wasn't as close as the score indicates.......

Yesterday, the New Orleans Hornets hired Willis Reed for their vice president of basketball operations. In his position, he will assist GM Allan Bristow and director of personnel Jeff Bower when it comes to roster decisions. Reed, enshrined at the Hall of Fame since 1982, led the Knicks to championships in 1970 and 1973; the title in 1970 was the first for the Knicks franchise and one of the most memorable performances in NBA History.......

The offseason in the NBA has just begun and weve already seen the most dominant player in the league and the reigning scoring champion both involved in trade talks. This should set the stage very nicely for tonights draft. We told you to expect a lot of trade activity back in Version One, and theyve already begun. Last night the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards brokered a deal that has Dallas sending 6th Man of......

We posted a few days ago that Marv Albert was out as the Knicks play-by-play broadcaster. What has transpired in the last few days since then has created an intense debate in the New York sports landscape. Gothamist is here to catch you up to speed. WFAN was first to report the departure of Marv Albert, they also reported that as soon as the negotiations had started to breakdown with Marv and the Garden. Marv......

The mere concept of Marv Albert not calling Knicks anymore, after he and Cablevision (owner of the MSG network, Madison Square Garden, and the Knicks) have ended their relationship (due to Albert's frustration to Cablevision's complaints that Albert criticized the Knicks organization...the way sportscasters tend to do), is basically heretical to Gothamist. He's been "Yes!"-ing up New Yorkers for the past forty years! His wacky sexual pecadilloes aside, Albert has always been a thoughtful, approachable......

Find out what it means to Tha D. Red Auerbach is safe. Coming into the NBA Finals the old Celtics codger and the Zen Master both had coached their teams to nine championships and the general consensus was that the Lakers would give Phil Jackson number 10. That however was not to be as the Pistons thoroughly dominated the Lakers, winning this years NBA Finals in five games. Instead of focusing on where the Lakers......
