It's not a deal of Stuy Town proportions, but the sale of the Apthorp building on Broadway between West 78th and 79ths Streets on the Upper West Side is still a big deal. According to the NY Times, Maurice Mann agreed to pay more than $425 million for the building that takes up the entire block (Broadway to West End, 78th to 79th). In our book, 2004 started when the ball at Times Square dropped in New York City. Mayor Bloomberg was joined by Cyndi Lauper and guest of honor, former Iragi POW Shoshana Johnson, in ringing in the New Year; Lauper looks like she's on the confetti diet. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly called 2003 a good year because it was "Another year where we haven't had a terrorist attack here." True, but, eek, what a downer.......

The Post gives suggestions for what to do on New Year's if you're still looking for that better offer. They range from dinner at Town ($150 per person) to dancing at APT ($125). The most expensive is at Cafe Carlyle, with entertainment by Bobby Short, which might just be worth the $500 if you can spare it; the cheapest is going to Grand Army Plaza, where there are free fireworks and other Brooklyn revelers. Gothamist......
