Paramore Arrives One of our favorite albums of the year is by these girl-fronted teenage pop-punkers, and they were in town this week to headline their largest local show yet at Roseland Ballroom. It was the last show of a massive national tour, but you wouldn't know it seeing front woman Hayley Williams running around stage with the rest of her band. Paramore may not win any originality contests, but they've got more fire and......

For those not wanting to hit the big Halloween parade (led by today's interviewee) there are other options: Park Slope's Halloween Parade (info here), Clinton Hill's Halloween Walk (info here) Prospect Park South's Halloween Parade (info here) and Williamsburg's Witches Walk (info here). EVENT: Hallowe'en is Happening Downtown at Trinty Church where both both kids and adults will find spooky spectacles tonight. For the little ones there will be an early evening filled with games,......

The Roseland Ballroom is hosting The New York City Tattoo Convention this weekend and videographer Kelly Loudenberg was onhand to capture an artist named Vincent Castiglia whose medium is human blood, the relentless buzz of dozens of needles perforating human flesh, and a lot of illustrated people. The TattooCon continues through tomorrow and tickets at the door are $18, with an all-access two-day pass going for $35.......

THEATER: At the end of December 2003, with her daughter in an induced-coma brought on by septic shock from a fatal bout with pneumonia, Joan Didion’s husband John Gregory Dunne unexpectedly died during dinner. Her struggle to navigate the subsequent minefields of grief formed the basis for her best-selling memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking. She’s now adapted the book into a one-woman play of the same name, directed by David Hare and starring Vanessa......

We're still filling our change jar, saving up for our next tattoo - so this weekends Tattoo Convention is a big tease for us. However, we may just have to head over there anyway. Artists worldwide will be displaying their work and, we're guessing, will be open for business if you want to get inked. In addition, there will be contests for best tattoos each day (more details on that here), a "sideshow" (which isn't......

It's exciting to see a band like Voxtrot at this point in their development. They have a unique blend of untapped potential and lo-fi naïveté. They are still so young. So raw. Their on stage persona is that of a bunch of kids messing around in their parents garage after school. It's fun and free and almost hard to take too seriously. What's so fascinating is that, in stark contrast to this novice image, they......

[ed. note: Gothamist is most likely, more often than not, standing next to you at one of the many shows happening in the city on any given week. We are everywhere. Now we aim to tell you about our experiences - the good, the bad and the out of tune - right here in our new review section headed up by Central Village's Jeff Baum.] Gothamist tries to avoid the Roseland Ballroom at all costs......

Gothamist is happy that people are still raising money for the Tsunami victims, so we wanted to draw some attention to upcoming events. Tonight Halycon Records [located at 63 Pearl Street in DUMBO] is having the opening party for an arts show that will run through March 20th. 50+ artists will be selling their work for $100 and under. If you can't head over tonight for the open bar, deejays and collaborative painting project, then......

For a change, the best shows aren't in the smallest clubs. Let's start with the larger rooms: The Roseland Ballroom, I hate to say it, is hosting two of the best shows this week. On Saturday, rock legends Patti Smith and Television perform. Then on Sunday, a somewhat younger band who are legends in their own day, Franz Ferdinand, return to the Roseland with The Evaporators and Blanche. Too bad Roseland blows, huh? Wilco plays......

Sorry this is a day late. I'm going to lay the blame squarely on the MTA. Why not? What the heck is going on tonight? Ah yes! The Ferd is back! Kids, Franz Ferdinand is in town tonight, playing that dreaded reverb chamber known as the Roseland Ballroom. One of the better live bands you'll see this year, no doubt about it. Opening for the Ferd is the Futureheads, who sound like a split between......

Before digging into this week's shows, and since more than a few of you might care, Gothamist should point out that Franz Ferdinand tickets go on sale tomorrow at noon. The show is on September 9th at the Roseland Ballroom, which is universally regarded to be one of the worst music venues on the planet. But if anybody could make a trip to that craphole worthwhile, it's Franz Ferdinand. Yes, believe the hype. Those guys......
