Between 2008 and the end of 2010, six New York City bridges will turn 100 years old, and the newly formed New York City Bridge Centennial Commission will be making sure they're adequately feted. The six centennial spans are the Madison Avenue, Manhattan, Borden Avenue, Pelham Bay, University Heights and Queensboro bridges. The celebrations were announced this morning by Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler and other officials at Tramway Park the base of the Queensboro Bridge.......

We'd like to thank all the nice businesses and apartment buildings on W. 116th St. that so thoughtfully cleared their sidewalks of slush this morning. It will be easy to thank them because there was only one place that actually shoveled their sidewalk. Come on people, you're a business with 400 square feet of sidewalk, how hard can it be to keep it clean? Snowfall totals across the city ranged from 1.9 inches at the......

A city employee moonlighting as a bouncer at The Bronx Cocktail was killed by a man angry that it was past last call. Raymond Barnett, 38, was killed when the man fired a gun into the bar around 5AM yesterday. Barnett worked for the city's Department of Design and Construction as the head of fleet management, but had taken the job at the bar to help out with bills. He had been closing up when......

Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a large sinkhole on Nostrand Ave. and Quincy St. in Brooklyn, a large fight on Park Ave. and 129th St. in Manhattan, and a water rescue at the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island. The Daily Show is giving the green screen that is used to fake remote segments a rest and actually sending correspondent Rob Riggle to Iraq to file reports for the satircal news show. This......

- Thing you've got bocce balls? Then you should test your stuff this weekend at the 12th Annual Citywide Bocce Tournament. Over 200 bocce enthusiasts from around the New York City area will compete Saturday and Sunday to see who's got the best. The tournament is free and open to adults of all ages. Today, Matt Green and Don Badaczewski are attempting to break the record for riding the entire subway system in the least amount of time (the current record is 25 hours, 11 minutes). They are starting this morning at 6AM at Rockaway Park and ending on the 6 to Pelham Bay Park. How old are you? Where do you live? Matt is 26. He lives in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and works in Manhattan as a transportation......

The only thing better than a tasty slice of pizza on a warm summer day in New York City is a tasty slice of pizza and a squeeze cup full of Italian ice. It’s been a grand culinary tradition in this town for generations: pizza and a frozen treat. Uncle Louie G’s cream ices are never more than a block away from a pizza parlor. Ralph’s Italian Ices is strategically located across the street from......

It's hot, humid, and I want to go to the beach. What are my options? Well, Gateway National Recreation Area is right in our neck of the woods, extending in three New York City boroughs and into northern New Jersey. It is a good place to start your quest for the perfect patch of sand and cooling waters. Queens: Jacob Riis Park 2 to Flatbush Ave., Q35 Bus to Riis Beach Staten Island: Great Kills......

In all my years as a yellow cabbie, not once have I taken a fare to City Island in The Bronx. But I can’t say I’m surprised by this fact. Exactly 4,634 people live on that tiny island in Pelham Bay, so in a city of eight million it would be statistically unlikely to find one of these “clamdiggers” as they call themselves. Consequently, I had no idea which of the wall-to-wall seafood restaurants......

Grabbing a slice of pizza in most New York City pizza parlors is a cold, impersonal affair. The transaction might last only seconds, and the extent of the verbal interaction could consist solely of the three words, “gimme a slice.” Maybe it is because eating pizza is so common amongst everyone from cab drivers to investment bankers, but many New Yorkers treat their pizzaioli like they treat their ATMs. Fortunately, at Louie & Ernie’s in......

Manhattan User's Guide is a constant source of interesting tidbids. Take for instance some miscellaneous facts they dug up about our fair city: Number of Waterfront Miles in NYC: 578 Number of Deaths from AIDS in 2004: 1,384, an 80% decrease since the peak in 1994. Wi-Fi Salon is installing Wi-Fi into 10 city parks over the next few months. Central Park will have eight hot spots (including the zoo, Delacorte Theater, and Boathouse), as will Orchard Beach, Flushing Meadows, Van Cortlandt, Pelham Bay, Prospect, Riverside, Union Square, and Washington Square Parks. The Daily News says that Battery Park's hotspot, near Battery Gardens, is already running and that Wi-Fi Salon is paying the Parks Department for the right to install the......
