Short-Term Missionary

Short-term mission trips offer a chance for LCMS members to perform Christian service while experiencing life in a different culture. Short-term missionaries contribute to the mission work being done in a country by participating in: evangelism, English teaching (ESL), vacation Bible school, construction, medical work and more.

Short-term missionaries typically serve a term of two weeks to six months. They are new college graduates; experienced, retired adults; and people who have been in the work force and are looking for a change of pace and a chance to serve. There are even a few service opportunities for students still in college. Short-term missionaries serve all over the world and in the United States as well.

Length of Service: Two weeks to six months.

Cost/Finances: The short-term missionary is responsible for all funds needed for service through personal contributions, fundraising and congregational support. All short-term missionaries are required to show proof of international medical insurance or they can purchase insurance through LCMS World Mission. LCMS World Mission will process and bill the short-term missionary for any necessary visa and evacuation insurance costs.

Selection Process: Includes a telephone interview and a physical examination.

Application: Submit applications as soon as possible. Preferably three to six months in advance.

Theological Educator

One of LCMS World Mission’s main strategies for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ is leadership development in our partner churches. By equipping pastors and future pastors, theological educators play an active role in facilitating the spread of the Gospel. LCMS members who serve as theological educators help provide a stronger theological foundation for seminary students. They serve as guest lecturers and teachers at seminaries and theological institutions around the world.

Length of Service: Although length of service can vary, most theological educators serve between three and six months.

Cost/Finances: Round-trip airfare, housing, health insurance and a stipend are provided. Round-trip airfare is also provided for spouses when theological educators serve six months or longer.

Selection Process: Applicants generally must have a Master’s in Sacred Theology (STM) in order to serve as a theological educator.
