MOVIE: Every national election year reminds us of that part in The Dark Crystal where the hideous Skeksis systematically drain the Gelfling’s “essence” and drink it to increase their power. If you don’t know the scene we’re talking about, you need to go see it on the big screen tonight – a regular-sized TV monitor just doesn’t do Jim Henson’s creepy masterpiece justice. The one-night-only screening will be introduced by one of the film’s puppet......

REMINDER: Don't forget about the Atlantic Antic Festival, which we wrote all about yesterday. EVENT: The d.u.m.b.o arts center (dac) presents the 11th Annual Art Under the Bridge Festival. The three-day fête takes up 30 blocks bringing together over 1500 visual artists, 250 open studios and offices, and an expected 20,000 attendees. Given much of the music biz in this city has offices in that area, they'll be taking part as well. The Deli Magazine......

It's not enough that David Wright is the new sex symbol for New York's baseball teams, now four other Mets get in on the action. Well, sort of. The July 17th issue of Sports Illustrated (on newsstands now) has the five members of the New York Metropolitans on the cover with the title, "Welcome To Rip City, The Adventures of Captain Red Ass And the Intrepid Mets." Of course, with that whole Sports Illustrated......

Often Gothamist runs opinion pieces relevant to life in New York and reviews of recent books and performances. The judgments expressed below are entirely those of the author. It’s always a challenge to make the old seem new, to repackage something timeworn so that people will see it differently. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Adventures of Charcoal Boy, the two productions of HERE Arts Center’s Dream Music Puppetry program currently running in repertory, and......

As we try to get over the possible snub of NYC by Matthew Bourne’s adaptation of Edward Scissorhands, at least we can console ourselves with the usual mind-bending assortment of theater that’s definitely here now. Last week we took note of Starmites, a comic book-inspired musical that was showing briefly at CAP 21, and wondered whether it could be a new trend. This week, to prove we’re not crazy (at least not because of this)......

yamaholiday! Becky Yamamoto is a super stand up performer for sure, but she is also an awesome audience member. Her laugh is loud and infectious and puts performers at ease because her enthusiasm for her peers is so genuine. Which is why we think the holiday show Becky is hosting at Galapagos [70 N. 6th St., Williamsburg] on Friday will be full of noggy cheer and also goodwill toward men and peace and stuff. A......

With such strange, non-wintery weather, it can be hard to comprehend that the holiday season is upon us – or at least it would be if retailers weren’t so insistent with their decorating and constant gift idea promotions. Theater companies are doing their part, too, gearing up with a wide variety of traditional and anti-tradition productions. One of these, closer to the latter pole, is Balletto Stiletto at La MaMa. It’s loosely based on......

Leave it to a conservative family group to claim that Spongebob Squarepants is an evil force that is supporting the homosexual cause. Focus on Family and the American Family Association claim that a video that includes everyone's favorite pineapple-dwelling porifera specifically asks kids to pledge tolerance of sexual identity. Uber-producer Niles Rodgers who created the video says the video actually promotes multi-culturalism and that the two groups are confused, because the foundation he works with,......

One of Gothamist's favorite movies, Hope and Glory, is playing at BAM tonight. It's part of BAM's retrospective of director John Boorman's work, The Adventures of John Boorman. Boorman's made his name with darker, more violent films like Point Blank and Deliverance, which is why Gothamist loves Hope and Glory so much: It's a hilarious film about a British family surviving World War II, from the middle-aged father who enlists to the young children who......
