Norah Does it in the Living Room! Perhaps in an effort to capitalize on some pending April Fools Day confusion, (or, less cynically, to honor the cozy club,) Norah Jones made a surprise appearance at the Living Room on Monday night. The Ludlow street lounge, which has been celebrating its 10-year anniversary with night after night of packed lineups with a sprinkling of some big names, is where the Queen of Mom Music got her...

While Forbes named NYC as one of the top singles cities in America last year, it turns out the reason why there are so many singles here is because women outnumber men by roughly 210,000. Things are not looking good, ladies. Apparently we are living in the worst "mating market" in the country! Richard Florida, the author of Who’s Your City?, delivers this news through the above map (which appeared in National Geographic). Perhaps...

Shine a Light, the Rolling Stones concert documentary filmed live at the Beacon Theater by Martin Scorcese, rolls out today in regular theaters and in IMAX, perhaps the only screen big enough to accommodate all the egos involved and Mick Jagger’s bellystache, which the Voice says is so prominently showcased “and crucial to Scorsese's ode-to-old-folk vision that the movie couldn't exist without it… Shine a Light is not only a vanity project for everyone...

Unless Ashton Kutcher is punking the media again, it appears Jay-Z and Beyoncé may be getting married after all. The Daily News is reporting a celebration is planned at the couple's NYC apartment tonight; either Jay-Z is celebrating his $150 million deal with Live Nation, or the two are finally tying the knot. While sources are mum, word is that Diddy was invited over to the apartment along with some other close friends tonight; Beyoncé's...

MUSIC: Word was spreading that the Red Hot Chili Peppers would be playing a free downtown show today as part of...Tartan Week. Clearly, the Red Hot Chili PIPERS would be a better fit for the event -- and so, the lesser known Pipers will actually be the ones entertaining the tartan-clad today. Friday // 5:30 p.m. // Hanover Square (directions) // Free THEATER: A dream team of hip theatrical innovators have joined forces, hopefully...

April 30th marks the date when cable viewers in Queens and Brooklyn can see NY1 in glorious high definition joining those in Staten Island who got it first. Fans of Pat Kiernan who live in Manhattan (along with New Jersey and the Hudson Valley) will have to wait a bit longer, with Time Warner promising to roll it out for them by the end of the year. Since cable TV is not like broadcast TV,...

Jonathan Butler has been talking real estate and renovation over at his blog, Brownstoner, since 2005. This year he brings his know-how offline with the most massive flea market Brooklyn has seen, aptly called Brooklyn Flea. While honing our haggling skills, we asked him a few questions about what to expect when it opens this weekend. How, and when, did you come up with the idea for Brooklyn Flea? I was a regular visitor to...

Brooklyn community groups opposed to the Atlantic Yards project are outraged developer Bruce Ratner will be honored tonight at a gala at the Brooklyn Museum. Ratner's Forest City Foundation gave $100,000 to the museum in ’05 and again in ’06; now the museum's is giving him their highest honor, the Augustus Graham Medal. Brooklyn resident Michael White is organizing a protest, and tells the Daily News, "A museum should be a good neighbor to its...

Re-enactment of pole-hogging behavior During the lively debate spurred by our man-sitting post yesterday, quite a few readers complained about pole hoggers/ pole leaners. So, we bring you another logo, designed by Catherine Weaver. Sometimes pole obstructing straphangers get into fights, sometimes subway poles are used for dancing. Here's one approach to turning pole huggers into holders....

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has yet again set up their ever-changing map showing "the approximate positions of every Prunus specimen in the Cherry Esplanade, Cherry Walk, Cherry Cultivars Area and Japanese Garden and its current blossom status." Only five have bloomed so far, the others showing buds but no petals just yet (picture of pre-bloom). Last year the garden was bursting with color around the end of April. When we asked Anita Jacobs and...

ART: Last summer, photographer and friend of Dash Snow, Ryan McGinley shot 4,000 rolls of film all over the U.S. with a troupe photogenic friends (and presumably no one brought clothes on this roadtrip). Tonight, 50 of those images (one is pictured) will be revealed at the opening of his "I Know Where the Summer Goes" show. 6 p.m. // Team Gallery [83 Grand St] // Free EVENT: We've often recommended going to Nerd...

Since first appearing on film in Woody Allen’s Manhattan, Wallace Shawn has become one of Hollywood’s most distinctive character actors, familiar to audiences for his striking performances in everything from The Princess Bride to The L Word. But theatergoers also know another side of Wallace Shawn; the relentlessly daring playwright whose work challenges conventional ideas about theater, power, sex, class, and, most unsparingly, liberal complacency. Tomorrow night Shawn will be participating in an “evening of...

First Madonna dissed New York City, calling it "boring," and now Miss Sex and the City herself is saying it's "not what it used to be." Sarah Jessica Parker may actually be doing us all a favor, however, by discouraging the inevitable flock or Carrie Bradshaw-wannabees from moving to the Big Apple after The Big Movie comes out later this year. SJP told the Daily News that Manhattan is "a really hard city, and it's...

The Queensbridge Theater said hello to the world via a post on their website earlier this year. It told the story of Michael Waldman, Robert Prichard and their 5,000-square-foot dream space located at 37-31 10th Street in Long Island City, Queens. The nearly-24-hour entertainment taking place in The Queensbridge Theater won't be of the ilk one is used to seeing around that area; the calendar will cater to a less seedy crowd. The space will...

© MURAKAMI, a retrospective of the work of Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, opens Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum. Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, where it was on view until February, the exhibit primarily focuses Murakami's work between 1991 and 2000, when the artist began exploring "his own reality through an investigation of branding and identity." (One additional work, Murakami's 6,613 pound, 18 foot-tall Oval Buddha sculpture, will be on...

THEATER: Everything’s coming up roses for Patti LuPone, whose sensational turn in a short run of Gypsy at City Center last year drew enough accolades to fuel a Broadway production, which has now opened to rave reviews. You might think the 1959 musical, composed by Jule Styne with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents, has been done to death by now – Bernadette Peters starred in the last Broadway rendition;...

Don’t adjust your television sets, because since Monday WNBC has been using "News 4 New York" in on-air mentions and on-screen graphics, switching gears from "Newschannel 4" (and "Newschannel 4 HD"). If you are from the Tri-State Area, you may remember the station used "News 4 New York" from 1980 until 1995. The old CGI opening included a bolt of lightning and a giant 4 heading towards the viewer (out of the Statue of Liberty's...
