Today's weather word is rain. The chance of rain will start increasing in the mid-afternoon. The city should see a steady rain beginning this evening and lasting until tomorrow morning. Up to an inch of rain is possible. That won't be the end of the rain either. There is a good chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon. Saturday's high may push close to 70. More rain is possible tomorrow night as well as Sunday......

Spring Central Park Sunset by AMARTI02 on Flickr A pleasant day is in store for today and tomorrow, with a brief interruption in between. A gentle southerly breeze and a day of sun should warm the city up to near 60 degrees this afternoon. A decaying cold front arrives tonight and brings with it a slight chance of rain. The rain, if it even happens, shouldn't occur until after tonight's game at Shea. Clouds......

Today is one of those strange weather days when it is actually much warmer in upstate New York than in the city. Highs in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse will approach 60 today, while NYC will be lucky to reach 50 degrees. The reason for this reversal is a high pressure system over the Canadian Maritimes. Air circulates clockwise and outward around high pressure systems which means the city will experience east winds off the ocean......

While the city is between rainfalls this morning, Gothamist would like to issue several reminders:First, the sidewalks of New York are not the beach. Please do not use your six-foot wide beach umbrellas in the rain. Second, though it pains shy New Yorkers to make eye contact, please do watch where you are going while using your umbrella. Third, your outerwear and preciously coiffed head will survive thirty seconds of rainfall. Please do not stop......

Last night's squall line dumped a quarter inch of rain in just a few minutes. More importantly, the passage of the cold front seems to signal a change in circulation patterns. The cool weather that has predominated the past couple of weeks is nowhere to be seen in the extended forecast. Today won't feel very warm because of the strong wind, but the high should reach a sunny 56. More sun is in store for......

Photo of Yankee Stadium announcement by peterkreder on flickr Opening day for the Yankees on Monday became opening night on Tuesday after bad weather and -- it seems, more importantly -- the forecast of bad weather persuaded the Yankees to postpone a game that was set for 1:05 p.m. to 7:05 p.m. the next day. That has many of the people with tickets to yesterday's game unhappy. The Sun tells of a couple who......

The weekend chill that continues today has been enough to drive the March temperature down below normal. Unless there's a totally unexpected heat wave this afternoon the average temperature of this month will be 42.3 degrees, or 0.2 degrees cooler than normal. That would make this month the coldest March since, uh, last March! What's more likely than a heat wave today is drizzle and rain. As the high pressure system that brought sunny, cool......

There is a frontal boundary just south of the city this morning and a disturbance has been kicking off showers as it moves eastward along the front. We should see light rain over the next couple of hours. There's a tiny chance of a thundershower until mid-afternoon. Today's high temperature forecast is a total coin flip. If the warm front stays south of the city the high will remain in the mid-40s. If that front......

do you see? pachyderm cloud by the_idealist on Flickr Finally, a beautiful, warm spring day! It will be on the breezy side today, but the sun will shine and the high will be around 60. Although the city has been cooler than normal for the past few days, March is on track to be slightly warmer than average. The pleasant weather should continue through tomorrow morning before tanking in the afternoon. A spring storm......

This week starts off with at least a couple of dry days before more March rains arrive. A big high pressure system covers the eastern half of the country this morning. Sinking air and a lack of humidity should keep the city dry today and tomorrow. The Weather Service mentions a slight chance of sprinkles for this afternoon and evening but their heart isn't in it. The high temperature today and tomorrow should flirt with......

Hold on to your tri-cornered hats! The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for today. A steady breeze of 20-30 miles an hour is expected to last much of the day as a strong high pressure system moves into the region following the departure of the deep low that brought us over an inch of rain the last two days. Gusts of up to 40, or even 50 mph are likely throughout the......

The last full day of winter is going to be wet. A low pressure system is moving up through Pennsylvania today as it heads toward the Canadian Maritimes. Steady rain and fog are expected to continue over the city through noon. The warm front that projects off the low should arrive early this afternoon. Once it does the steady rain will turn showery. Showers will last until a cold front sweeps through tomorrow morning. Late......

In addition to being St. Patrick's Day, March 17th is also the first day of the year in which New York's average high reaches 50 degrees. The mercury will fall just short of that mark this afternoon as it rebounds from below freezing this morning. A blustery north wind will make it feel much colder as well. A monstrously large-looking storm currently centered over the southern Great Plains will be tomorrow's weather maker. The......

Judging from the plunging dewpoints and jump in pressure a cold front passed through the city between 8 and 9 this morning. It is going to take a few hours for cooler air to arrive, meaning today's high may reach the upper 40s before cooling down after lunch. Clear skies tonight will allow for a lot of cooling and a strong westerly breeze will add to the chill. Tomorrow is looking sunny with seasonable temperatures.......

A sunny College Walk photo by Ciaophotos Of the four seasons, it is winter that departs most grudgingly. And that was an intense wind late Saturday night! Western New York and Ohio beared the brunt of the weekend storm, with Columbus receiving a record 20 inches. Across the Atlantic our weekend storm is now striking the UK, which was reeling from a weekend storm of their own. Conditions should be fairly calm for the......

Photograph of Grand Army Plaza during the rain by Miguel Ariel Contreras Drake-McLaughlin After the past two days of flood watches and warnings amid pouring rain, things are a bit brighter today. But there is a high wind warning. As WABC 7's AccuWeather says, it'll be "42 degrees but because of biting wind feel-like temperatures will be in 20s-30s." Which is a lot cooler than yesterday's high of 57 degrees. There were a number......

Tomorrow would be a good day to sleep in. All day. It may be sunny outside this morning but that sun is about to be replaced with clouds and heavy rain as a massive storm move up the Ohio Valley. Although the city was mostly spared, wind and rain caused quite a mess across the metro area last night. About twenty thousand homes lost power, including 900 in Queens and 300 in the Bronx. The rain is not over! There is one more line of storms headed our way. The rain is currently over central New Jersey and will pass through the city this morning. Skies should rapidly clear in the early afternoon. Until then,......

Today's weather is a winner! Sunny and warm with a high in the mid-50s. Enjoy it if you can as tomorrow and Wednesday will feature varying degrees of wetness. The culprit is a nasty cold front that currently slices the country in two from Chicago to San Antonio. In classic springtime severe weather fashion, a low pressure system is spinning up over the front in Texas this morning. The low will surf along the front......

A chilly and sunny morning will give way to clouds and snow this evening. As the clouds move in today's high should creep up to the freezing mark. Snow will likely start late this evening as an Alberta Clipper moves over the eastern Great Lakes. Only 1-2 inches of snow are expected and it wouldn't surprise Gothamist if the southern and eastern reaches of the city received only a dusting. If you're in the mood......

After a couple of warmish days the city has quickly cooled off in the wake of last night's cold front passage. There's quite a pressure gradient associated with yesterday's storm. So, even though the low is now over the Canadian Maritimes, the city will still feel its windy ways today. Expect winds to rev up to 20 miles an hour, with gusts to 30 mph, throughout the day. A brief snow flurry or two is......

The late-winter weather rollercoaster continues on its up and down journey this week. After a cool weekend today will be the most pleasant day of the week. A weak high pressure system sliding out to sea will keep the skies mostly sunny. Highs today will be in the mid-40s. The temperature won't change much tomorrow, but the city is in for a wet day. A storm currently over Oklahoma is expected to move up through......

Photograph of someone determined to get around in the snow by Charley Lhasa on Flickr After January hype - which resulted in rain - and a brief moment of snow last week, a winter snow storm finally made an appearance this year. East Village Snow by AllWaysNY on Flickr A complicated pair of weather disturbances are bringing a wintry mix to New York today. This morning a short wave trough, think of this as a kink in the jet stream, has brought instability to the atmosphere, which has caused the early morning snow to fall. The short wave will give way later today to a developing coastal storm, which will bring more snow and probably freezing rain......

The snowy weather is causing the usual commute problems: The snow accumulation is around 4-6 inches in the city, with more to the north and a little less to the south, and visibility is low for drivers. There are a number of accidents on highways and roads, and more are sure to happen later on in the day when the snow is expected to turn into freezing rain and sleet. For some subway riders, there......

Through yesterday, this month was on pace to be the tenth warmest February recorded in Central Park. Cooler conditions today, and especially tomorrow, will put a kibosh on any top ten dreams the month may have had. This morning's water vapor satellite image, complete with dry tongue of air from Georgia to Maryland, from the National Weather Service You might think that today's forecast, warm with a chance of a thundershower, is a harbinger of spring. Yesterday's high of 40 and low of 28 was exactly average for Valentine's Day. Today, like all the children in Lake Wobegon, will be above average with a high temperature close to 50 degrees.
