Cycling
Cycling is a convenient and low cost way to get around and lets you fit exercise into your daily routine. It is recommended to ride a bike for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week to achieve the minimum level of weekly physical activity.
Half of all car journeys made in suburban London are less than two kilometres - easily within walking or cycling distance. Kings Cross to Farringdon and Liverpool Street to Chancery Lane are both around two kilometres by foot.
A 20-minute bike ride will burn off a whole pack of wine gums, while a 30-minute walk is equivalent to a small glass of wine.
As well as helping to beat the winter blues it's also a practical way to help tackle climate change. If you're getting out of your car and on to your bike then why not take the imovelondon pledge.
Over the past year the number of cyclists in London has grown by 83 per cent and many London boroughs offer free cycle training to residents, so there's never been a better time to get peddling.
We have invested in cycling in the last seven years by:
- Building and extending the cycling network
- Improving greenways and providing extensive cycle parking on the street, at railway and underground stations, in schools and in workplaces across London
Plan a cycle route
Whether you are cycling to your destination for the first time or looking for a different route, we have two ways for you to plan a handy route in London:
- Journey Planner allows you to choose cycling as your sole form of transport, producing a series of detailed maps and instructions to guide you to your destination
- Cycling guides cover Greater London and feature all the cycle routes which have been mapped by TfL. They can be ordered online and will be posted to you free of charge
So it's over to you - get fitter and get happier by getting on your bike.
