Competitive cycling
There are two purpose built cycle facilities in London:
- In west London is the newer Hillingdon Circuit (Springfield Rd off A4020 Uxbridge Rd, 020 8737 7797) which also has a tarmac road circuit and some off road trails.
- In the south is Herne Hill (Burbage Road, SE24 9HE, 020 7737 4647), the venue of the 1948 Olympic track competitions. The 450m outdoor track has in recent times been upgraded with highish banking on the corners. There are also a few off road trails which are being developed and track training sessions are also held. Access to the track is currently limited so please check the following web site for opening information.
The surrounding counties also provide plenty of roads and hills for racing and riding.
Looking for some competitive races but don't know where to start?
Give any of the above facilities a call and they will be able to tell you what current events are taking place.
Alternatively, have a look at the following links which all have events sections on their websites (there are far too many sport cycling events in London to list them all here!)
- Londoncyclesport.com is a non-commercial website developed for the cyclesport community of London and the South East, created and maintained by members of that community. This site gives advice to newcomers on whether your are wanting to get involved with mountain biking, track or road races and provided a detailed list of cycling events open to you within London.
- Also have a look at the British Cycling's website (the internationally recognised Governing Body in Britain for all cycle racing).
