Disco Biscuts Bring Something Different to the Pool Sick of all that boring "indie" music polluting your fresh Greenpoint air this summer, Mr. cynical anonymous Gothamist commenter? Well maybe you prefer the jam-trance mania of the Disco Biscuits instead! No? Well a whole crowd of people did, comfortably filling McCarren Pool earlier this week with people who (no joke) bought their tickets on 4/20 @ 4:20 in the afternoon. Those in attendance seemed to have......

In their quest to take over New York, Bowery Presents is opening yet another venue! Ask just about anyone (and we have) and they'll say that the Bowery Ballroom is their favorite place to see and/or play music - so who better to open even more spaces than the creators of that one? The latest establishment will be in Midtown and is called Terminal 5 (the old Club Exit). Currently there are no photos, but......

Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico. Bostonist was happy they finally found an Anna Nicole Smith connection to their fair city and that an Apple Store was opening up. They were less happy that new rules have been established limiting underage shows and that their Governor spending a lot......

We're sort of over the Colbert vs The Decemberists publicity stunt, but it aired last night - and it was pretty hilarious. There were appearances by: Henry Kissinger, the New York Times Anthony DeCurtis, Jim Anderson, Eliot Spitzer, Peter Frampton and Apples in Stereo's Robert Schneider (Stereogum has the lyrics to his song from the show last night). No Colin Meloy, though...Colbert said, "The rest of the band is back in Portland probably growing hemp......

Got some downtime? You've got the rest of the day to work on an entry for The Decemberists video contest. They filmed themselves in front of a green screen and want the rest filled in, but we're sure you've heard about this already. Here's a timeline (with slightly unrelated topics added for drama!): • Chris Ott starts verbal slapping match with The Decemberists Colin Meloy. • Stephen Colbert calls Meloy a "thief". (Video above)......

Ah, the end of the year is upon us...and that means one thing: end of the year lists. Information Leafblower is a little ahead of the game and has posted his fourth annual "Top 40 Bands In America (As Voted On By A Bunch Of Effing Music Bloggers That Only Listen To Cooler Than You Guitar Based Indie Rock And Not Much Else)" list. You can get the full list here. New York bands TV......

Over the past year we've heard of way too many incidents of equipment being stolen from bands. We just received an email from a reader asking about a possible theft (from this weekend?): Have you ever heard of a club called Trash in Brooklyn? I heard a story that a band got all their equipment stolen from their U Haul after doing a gig there. We wouldn't doubt it. So far over the past year......

When the Summerstage lineup was announced last spring, one show clearly stood out from the rest. To have three of the most popular indie-pop bands playing the same bill at Central Park was as much a Seth Cohen dream come true as it was for Gothamist. Naturally, we were there. Stars were up first. Anybody who hasn't yet heard their 2005 release Set Yourself on Fire (Which Gothamist reviewed back in March) is truly......

Will the real Neil Diamond please step forward? The kings of (indie) rock n' roll converge on NYC this week. Each will attempt to outdo the other. Ben Gibbard impersonator Colin Meloy and his merry band of Decemberists return for their umpteenth NYC show since they first set foot here in May 2003. We aren't complaining. The Thursday night gig at the 5000 capacity Summerstage promises to be their biggest New York show yet, but......

On March 17th this message was posted on the Decemberists website: Hello All, At some time between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., the band's gear trailer was stolen from outside a house in SE Portland, near the Aladdin Theatre. Heartbreakingly, it housed practically every piece of instrumentation belonging to the Decemberists. So this is a sort of call to arms; I figure if we get the word out, maybe we all can collectively track it......

Since this seems to be hard to grasp for some we just want to reiterate that this post is just to let you know that we've noticed a few tickets that are on sale for shows that we believe may sell out. We won't be repeating any ticket listings we posted last time, so you may want to give that list a once over as well. Also, we put a $ sign next to overpriced......

Hyper-important must-see event of the month, first: Tomorrow (Jan 19), The Hold Steady play Mercury lounge. Ticket available through TicketWeb. This is no joke, everyone. Ten dollars. Such a great band. So much fun. I just wrote those short little sentences and sentence fragments without the expletives that were thrusting through my fingertips. Calmly: See this show. Send thank you notes here. What do they sound like? You know that fun, awesomely written, rock and......

CMJ is here. For New Yorkers, you've probably already seen many of these bands. Everybody plays here. But the number of shows and the number of people crammed into the clubs for these shows is greater than normal. Be careful out there. - The Donnas and Dogs Die in Hot Cars play a late show tonight at the Bowery Ballroom. The show starts at 1:15am. - Earlier in the evening, the Bowery hosts The Decemberists,......

This is where Gothamist tells you about all of the shows you should buy tickets for NOW because they will in fact sell out, and you will in fact be scanning Craigslist in hopes of finding a ticket for double the face value at the last minute. So pay attention and purchase wisely. This months list was particularly hard to compose because of the ratio of really good shows to the amount of money we......

Gothamist did not know much about The Decemberists before seeing them last week at the Mercury Lounge, but one thing we were sure of was that the song, "Song for Myla Goldberg," had to be about Brooklyn author Myla Goldberg who wrote The Bee Season. And lo and behold, the Onion AV Club and Journal News confirmed things. The Decemberists also have a song called "Billy Liar," an homage to the play and movie. Both......
