What is the Canadian Genealogical Projects
Registry? The Canadian Genealogical Projects Registry is a free
electronic resource for the genealogical community. It will answer:
"Just who has transcribed the headstones from
the Central Cemetery?"
Is there an index for the 1901 census for Alberta
Where can I advertise the extraction/transcription project
that my society is working on?
Think about it. Have you ever painstakingly transcribed the
surnames from an entire village cemetery (just in case you need
them in the future), only to discover a few months later, that
the cemetery has been transcribed and published by someone else.
We hope to help eliminate such duplication of work by providing
a central place where small and large genealogy projects can
be listed. This Registry will be a site where you can find out
which extraction/transcription projects are planned, underway,
or have been completed.
What is this going to cost me? There are no charges to those
who visit and use our Projects Registry, or to those individuals
and organizations who ask us to list their Projects. This Registry,
itself, is a project of the Alberta Family Histories Society and
its volunteers.
However, professional/commercial fees may be charged for data
access -- that will be the prerogative of individual project
stewards. By visiting the respective website or contact point
provided such details will be provided by those project stewards.
Isn't this already done by someone else? No. There are lots
of sites that offer links to other websites which have links to
advice sites, to link sites, and/or to data sites. But, there
is no central Canadian web resource to show data resources that
are not on the internet, or that are in the planning stages.
We feel that by developing this registry, genealogical researchers
and volunteers in Canada will be able to find data resources
better, avoid duplication of extraction/data entry efforts,
and faciliate the access of non-web based resources.
Do we have to have a website to submit a project?
No. We do require that you provide either a mailing address or a
phone number, so that the site visitor can be in touch with the
project manager or steward.
Can only societies submit projects?
No. Anyone can submit a project: a person, a group of people, a
society, a business, or a government department/agency.
Do I/we have to give up copyright to be part of the Projects
Registry?
No. You still are owner/steward/developer of the data resource.
We simply are creating an online inventory of genealogical projects
underway or completed.
Can I change information after I've registered a project or
projects?
Yes. We would like the site to remain as current as possible. In
fact, if we don't hear from you, we'll contact you once a year to
see whether the information is still accurate. And, we'll be validating
any weblinks regularly as well.
Is there a registry for non-Canadian Genealogical Projects and
how can I contact them?

but would be pleased if you would provide a link to the webpage
from your organization/business/personal website as possible. To
facilitate this, we have provided a clickable image that you can
incorporate into your website. If your work is in paper form, you

Our webster will incorporate your information into the online
registry as soon as possible - usually within a week. Just save this image and provide the following html code

This project is the brainchild of the past AFHS Projects Chair,
Janet Morgan, who has developed many indexes that are helpful to
genealogists researching in Southern Alberta. Alberta
Genealogical Society made a very substantial contribution to
the Registry by compiling and supplying AFHS with a database listing
of a great many of the recording and transcription projects for
the Province.
Disclaimer: Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy in
the preparation of the items in the Registry, but human errors
are always possible. If you find an error of any sort, please
advise us so that we can look into the matter and look after it
immediately. Wherever possible, we have provided links
to online indexes to information. In all cases, stewards have
been identified. By contacting them, you may be able to acquire
more data than appears in the online sources as a response to
a specific query or by purchasing a publication. There may be
fees set by the data stewards for such additional information.
