All
the nations, territories, Dominions, Colonies, Protectorates and Mandates
that were at any time a part of the British Empire and Commonwealth are
covered in this section. Each national page collates internet links about
the nation's military history into the same sixteen or so categories so
that you can expect the same consistent treatment for every country. External
sites are indexed here to the depth necessary to bring out these categories.
Each page will also eventually contain a brief constitutional and miltary
chronology to put everything in context. See, for example, Malta.
Territories conquered in war but ceded at war's end are covered in the relevant
war pages of this site.
The most notable exception to our coverage is the post-independence United States of America, whose military and political institutions are too extensive for this site, minimally modelled on the British, and adequately covered elsewhere. The other notable omission is Mozambique, which, although a member of the Commonwealth, never had any British heritage. The one notable addition is Nepal due to its special relationships with Britain and India. Not all former parts of the Empire have joined the Commonwealth, and some have been evicted after having been members, but all are included here regardless of their current Commonwealth status. |
