Brief Constitutional & Military History of Zambia

Note: for a fuller imperial constitutional history see British Empire and Commonwealth

Constitutional history:   The region came under the control of Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company in 1890s. Britain assumed control from the Company 1924.  Northern Rhodesia federated in 1953 with Nyasaland and Southern Rhodesia with a view to achieving independence as a unified country.  The Federation dissolved 1963, and the three constituent countries pursued separate paths to independence. Northern Rhodesia became an independent republic in 1964 as Zambia.
