General Policy on Questions and Comments

We welcome email comments and questions. Keep reading, and we will tell where to write!

Submissions of new and corrected URLs are especially welcome. Queries about British Empire and Commonwealth military history are also welcome.

However, due to the high volume of email received, we cannot guarantee answers to all queries. Only a small selection can be answered or acknowledged. Since this website is a labour of love rather than a business, the amount of time we can devote to answering queries is very limited. If you do not receive a reply within two weeks, chances are that we either do not have an answer to your question or that we do not have the time to answer.

To increase your chances of receiving the reply you deserve, please "Read the Fine Manual"! This page is that fine manual. You will learn some basic things about this site that might explain, for instance ...

Why do I get no answer to my email queries?

While we will make a reasonable effort to answer reasonable questions, we necessarily need to filter some out due to the high volume. Some questions will NOT be answered, namely:

(1)  Most genealogical questions -- see Frequently Asked Questions for elaboration on our policy.
(2) Searches for lost comrades -- see Frequently Asked Questions for some basic guidance on this question.
(3)  Recruitment, and other current military policy questions, which are best addressed to official agencies such as local recruiting stations, Army and regimental webmasters.  This website is designed to provide you with appropriate contacts if they are known.  If you do not find contact information here, we do not currently have it.
(4) Requests for contact information (email, telephone numbers, street addresses) of regiments and other institutions. If we have it, it is linked on the appropriate page of this site.
(5)  Questions that assume we officially represent an Army or Regiment. Such questions are best directed to the appropriate agency. See our Scope and Disclaimers.
(6)  Questions that can easily be answered by a more careful exploration of this website, and the Frequently Asked Questions.
(7) Questions clearly outside the scope of this site, e.g. pre-1660 period, naval forces, air forces, modern U.S. armed forces.
(8) Requests which include unsolicited file attachments over 900 KB.
(9) Requests with incorrectly formatted reply addresses. If you do not receive a (preliminary) automatic response from us, there is something wrong at your end. You would be surprised how often this happens, but it means that it is technically impossible to respond to you.
(10) Requests responding to our "automated response" or follow-up questions which make no reference the date and subject of the original query. We do not have the time to attempt to match your successive queries with each other.

 Identifying Photographs

Please note: As of October 2003, our free photo identification service has been discontinued. See the next section for other free assistance in identifying your photographs.

Submission of photographs grants the right of Regiments.Org to display them on this website.

 Reaching a Wider Audience

To assure that your historical or genealogical question reaches a wider audience of experts, and gets a better chance of a prompt answer, we strongly recommend that you post your question to forums such as:

Each of the regimental, national and war pages on this website has a section devoted to email forums. See these for more ideas about appropriate places to post queries. We regularly read these and frequently post answers there, but if we cannot answer a question, others might. In some instances this may require obtaining a password or a free subscription, but it is almost always worth the effort.
