The
2001 Main axle will have to be disassembled to get to
the 5th gear pinion which needs to be reused since it
hasn't changed when the Tranny was redesigned for 2002.
I recommend that if you don't have a hydraulic press available
take the '01 main axle, new gears, '02 axle and this page
to your local shop or service station.

2001 Main Axle Disassembly
- Press off the reverse pinion and set aside
- Remove the 4th gear pinion - its slides off.
- Remove the 2nd gear pinion - it also slides off.
- Remove the Circlip
- Remove the toothed washer.
- Remove the 5th Gear Pinion.

2002 Main Axle assembly
- Lube and install the 5th Gear Pinion on the 2002 Main
axle.
- Secure it with a toothed washer P/N 90209-21332-00
(#3 on the fiche)
- and circlip P/N 93440-25084-00
(#4 on the fiche)
- Lube and install the 2nd Gear Pinion P/N 5LP-17121-10-00
(#5 on the fiche)
- Lube and install 4th Gear Pinion, P/N 5LP-17141-10-00
(#6 on the fiche)
Double check placement of all gears to make sure they
are not backwards. The gear should engage each other.

Reverse Pinion
To get the measurement needed during reassembly I measured
the clearance here. The reverse pinion (small gear on
the end at the right in the picture) is holding the 4th
gear pinion on the shaft. The Main axle is shouldered
between the splines and where these 2 gears ride.
.015 in / .381mm

Press
the Reverse Pinion on the Main Axle. Periodically check
the clearance shown above at the 4th gear pinion. There
can be lubrication problems if this is not set correctly
