200 Lawmakers Hail President’s Speech
084498.jpg
Benefactors build 40 percent of new schools in a year across the country.
TEHRAN, Sept. 26--Lawmakers in a statement on Wednesday hailed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for defending the stances of the Islamic Republic of Iran by delivering an eloquent speech in the New York-based Columbia University.
The statement, signed by 200 legislators, was read out by a member of Majlis Presiding Board, Hossein Nejabat, IRNA reported.
They said that Ahmadinejad has seized the opportunity by attending the UN General Assembly’s annual meeting and conveying the message of the Iranian nation to the international community.
However, the lawmakers pointed out that Ahmadinejad’s visit to the US this year was different because the president delivered a speech in a prestigious American university and in the presence of university professors and students.
“How the president behaved in Columbia University and reacted toward the insulting remarks of the president of Columbia University was an example of Islamic and revolutionary behavior,“ the lawmakers said.
They also said that the manner in which Columbia University president, Lee Bollinger, insulted President Ahmadinejad and the manner in which the US media highlighted his statements shows that the arrogant powers do not want a better relationship and dialogue to be established among nations.

US Condemned
For Blacklisting IRGC
TEHRAN, Sept. 26--Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini strongly condemned on Wednesday the “irresponsible and illegal“ approval of the US House of Representative, which puts the Islamic Revolution’s Guards Corps on the list of terrorist organizations.
“Putting armed forces of a UN member country on the list of terrorist groups is a strange and unprecedented act which lacks any value or credit,“ said Hosseini on Wednesday, IRNA reported.
He added that such uncalculated and illegal decisions will not help restore peace and security worldwide, rather they will prepare conditions under which any country allows itself to defy international regulations and put the legal and official institutions of other countries on the list of terrorist groups on the basis of false charges.
The IRGC in its entirety represents a military force that has risen from within Iran’s revolutionary nation and is acting within the framework of the Iranian Constitution and follows legal strategies.
Hosseini said any confrontation with the popular forces would mean confrontation with the great Iranian nation.
“Those who file charges against the IRGC are, in fact, setting themselves up against the 70 million Iranian population,“ he said.
“Such an action taken by the US is an example of blame game.“
Hosseini pointing to the killing of defenseless civilians, supporting and arming terrorist groups, building secret cells, making illegal arrests and torturing prisoners as the blatant instances of the US military’s terrorist and immoral moves in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“All countries and international organizations should show a proper reaction to such illegal measures of the US army,“ he said.

Speaker:
American Approach Dubious
TEHRAN, Sept. 26--Majlis Speaker Gholamali Haddad Adel said on Wednesday the US is not sincere over the nuclear issue and pressures countries for their peaceful nuclear activities.
Haddad told North Korean Ambassador in Tehran Kim Chong Ryong that the discriminatory and dubious US approaches toward the nuclear issue are criticized worldwide, IRNA reported.
He stressed the need to confront Washington’s aggressive and hegemonic policies and said the Iranian and North Korean nations’ resistance to such an arrogant strategy is among the main commonalities of the two sides.
The speaker said the common resistance, courage and stances of Iran and North Korea have prepared the ground for closer mutual friendship.
“Majlis is ready to render any sort of legislative assistance to North Korea, if necessary,“ he said.
Kim, for his part, said the US is not reliable and as long as it has not stopped its hostile policies toward North Korea, talks will be futile.
Referring to the so-called six-party talks, the envoy said North Korea is moving cautiously and will take necessary actions in dealing with the US.
Kim also said that his country wants enhanced economic and commercial cooperation with Iran, urging Majlis to facilitate this cooperation.

Morales Defends Iran Ties
NEW YORK, Sept. 26--Bolivia’s President Evo Morales on Tuesday defended collaboration with Iran on the sidelines of the 62nd United Nations General Assembly, according to news reaching here.
“We are from the culture of dialogue and life, without marginalization and discrimination. We are about unity, solidarity and complementarily,“ he said, adding that he would open negotiations with all nations which can help defend life, Xinhua reported.
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will arrive in Bolivia on Thursday to sign aid agreements as well as deals on technology transfer and construction of industrial plants.
“We decided to begin this agreement and open diplomatic relations with Iran to complement and improve the nation’s economic situation, not to damage or offend anyone,“ he said.
Iran is under international pressure for its nuclear enrichment program, which it says is for peaceful purposes. However, the United States has accused Tehran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of civilian usage.
President Ahmadinejad will visit Bolivia and Venezuela as of Thursday, following his visit to the US where he addressed the 62nd UN General Assembly session.
Ahmadinejad and his entourage will leave New York for Bolivia on Wednesday and after half a day visit will head for Caracas, Venezuela, on Thursday.

70 Killed in Iraq Blasts
BAGHDAD, Iraq, Sept. 26--Iraq was on Wednesday rocked by 10 powerful car and suicide bombings that killed 31 people, raising the toll in a three-day surge of bloodletting across the country to about 70, officials said.
“There was an increase in violence in the past few days,“ US military spokesman Major General Kevin Bergner told reporters in Baghdad. “We had been expecting it.“
In one of Wednesday’s attacks, a suicide bomber rammed his car into the house of a tribal sheikh who had been supporting police in the fight against Al-Qaeda and detonated his explosives, killing eight people and wounding 10, an official said. The sheikh was among those wounded.
The attack in the town of Sinjar, west of the main northern city of Mosul, targeted the home of Sheikh Kanan Al-Juhaimur, a Sunni tribal leader, according to the town’s mayor, Dakheel Qasim Hassu.
He said Juhaimur had recently thrown his support behind police in their fight against Al-Qaeda in the volatile district.
Police said 28 people were killed and 34 wounded in that attack, which took place in a mosque during talks between local leaders of the Shiite Mahdi Army militia and the rival Sunni insurgent group, the Brigades of the 1920 Revolution.
Synchronized car bombs, meanwhile, ripped through a crowded marketplace in the town of Shargat, 300 kilometers (185 miles) north of Baghdad, on Wednesday killing at least seven people, police said.
Five people were killed and more than 40 people injured in three bombings in Mosul, where the authorities imposed a curfew, security officials said.
As evening fell, two car bombs exploded in a marketplace in southwestern Baghdad’s Baya district, killing three people and wounding 20, security officials said.
In Baquba, north of Baghdad, five people--all members of one family--were shot dead when gunmen entered their home before dawn and sprayed them with bullets.
The fresh surge of violence comes after a period of relative calm that had followed the bloody start to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on September 13, when Abu Reesha was killed.
Al-Qaeda in Iraq, an affiliate of Osama bin Laden’s jihadi network, claimed the killing and promised a new offensive during Ramadan.
Senior US military commanders say that levels of violence during Ramadan, which since the US-led invasion of 2003 has become a period of increased bloodshed, will provide an indicator as to how soon American troop levels in Iraq can be reduced.

Iran's Sepahan players celebrate their victory against Japan's Kawasaki Frontale in their Asia Champions League quarterfinal match in Kawasaki on Wednesday.
KAWASAKI, Japan, Sept. 26--Iran’s Sepahan defeated Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale on penalties Wednesday after both sides went scoreless in their Asian Champions league quarterfinal match.
The hosts had several close shots at goal, including a lob by Brazilian striker Juninho that was swatted clear by Sepahan goalie Abbas Mohammadi near the end of the first half, AP reported.
But the Japanese side failed to crack Sepahan’s defense through 120 minutes of play at Todoroki Stadium. Sepahan won 5-4 in a penalty shootout.
In the semifinals, Sepahan will play the winner of the match between Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal and United Arab Emirates’ Al-Wahda, scheduled later Wednesday.

Perspec
Of Decency
And Bankruptcy
By Amin Sabooni
I admit I was wrong. Indeed very wrong, about some tiny possibility of Iran trying to bury the past and work for some sort of rapprochement with the United States after almost three decades of hostile relations.
What happened at Columbia University on Monday (Sept. 24) was more than enough to put me and very many who think that Iran-US relations can be repaired with help from beyond political corridors, in our proper place. Fears of the skeptics, well versed in American arrogance and ignorance, and pushing for a full and irreversible end to any contact with the Yankees, were confirmed.
This time around it was not the likes of Bush, Cheney, the Rummies or other fanatic anti-Iran neocons dreaming about obsolete ways to bend or destroy Iranian dignity by using derogatory language against one of our senior authorities. Of course, the introductory language that Columbia’s head, Lee Bollinger used while introducing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the high-profile audience was more worthy of himself and the present White House occupant.
This is what Bollinger said in the intro which will remain a permanent fixture in the minds of informed Iranians including very much those folks who had hardly been great fans of the president:
“I am only a professor, who is also a university president. Today I feel all the weight of the modern civilized world yearning to express the revulsion at what you stand for. Mr. President, you exhibit all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator.“
He, however, did not give the date and other details about when the “civilized world“ sent him on mission to speak on its behalf or carry its heavy burden.
Now if these are the best and brightest from the “most powerful“ country, and this is academia of one of the prestigious centers of higher learning across the world, one can only imagine the mindset of its greedy politicians and corrupted spin doctors.
That the senior American teacher was playing to the gallery of Zionist Jews and their neo-Christian helpers in the Bush White House is not unusual, given the fact that in the US money has a way of getting things done. What was strange, shocking, but not surprising, was how a person of Columbia caliber gives himself the liberty to address an elected leader of a country in this uncivilized manner.
By attacking our president with such grotesque language, Bollinger might have been applauded by some and even got himself a few minutes of fame (Iran-bashing is a lucrative business in the decaying west). His crass exploitation of fact may also land him some better paid job in the future. But his name, for valid reasons, will be added to the black list of cheap opportunists and self-appointed thinkers out to make something from nothing.
And what was Ahmadinejad’s response? As the cameras zoomed on his face, it was apparent that the president had been hurt. At that moment, he may even have cursed himself for taking the high-voltage risk of accepting the university’s invitation to speak in a fresh effort to lay out his roadmap for building a better world with the help of informed debate.
In his decent, cool and calm manner, that many a times surprises his strong political opponents at home, the president said what he had heard from the unkind host was a “political statement“. He noted that it was an “insult to the intelligence of the audience“ because the lethal charges had been hurled even before he had spoken or taken questions from the students and teachers.
The Columbia encounter with all its repugnance did have a positive side which its big wigs very likely may not have envisioned. Ahmadinejad scored further points with Muslim-Arab public opinion as a hero standing up to western arrogance and defending the rights of the downtrodden this time on enemy turf. It would be fair to also say that in a matter of an hour or so the number of people supporting the president’s foreign policy increased by several million in and outside Iran.
Now more than ever before, it’s visible that arrogance and ignorance have become an ally of the white west and that things will and must get worse for the western racists out to rule the world.
This week intellectual decency in the west sank to new lows and intellectual bankruptcy gathered extra points. Policymakers in Tehran should not be deluded in their search for some ’accommodation’ with this or that Uncle Sam’s administration. There is no more reason why our statesmen should waste the nation’s resources and sit at the same table to make things easier for the US in Iraq or anywhere else. Conventional wisdom would argue that we do otherwise.
May be we were swimming in a sea of illusion thinking Iran and America can sort out their problems and may have some common grounds. We really never had. The US was, is, and will remain a dangerous enemy. This is the simple political arithmetic I failed to understand over the past quarter century.
