For Palestinians

Have Equal Rights

TEHRAN, April 16--Majlis Speaker Gholamali Haddad-Adel said on Sunday Iran is opposed to anti-Semitism and the massacre of Jews, while Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced fresh humanitarian suport for the oppressed Palestinians.
The speaker made the remark at a press conference attended by domestic and foreign reporters on the sidelines of the International Conference on Qods and Support for Palestinian Rights, IRNA reported.
Haddad-Adel noted that Iran has a long history of coexistence with Jews and showed that it has no dispute with them.
“Iranian Jews enjoy equal rights just as others,“ he said.
The speaker added that the western states’ opposition to any investigation into Holocaust only “adds to existing doubts“.
“While any insult against Islam’s Holy Prophet (PBUH) is not condemned under the pretext of freedom of speech, it is surprising that any researcher who casts doubt on Holocaust is prosecuted and sent to prison. If the case of Holocaust was true, Europeans should not be frightened,“ he said.
Haddad-Adel further said that supporting the political rights of Palestinians is the best way to save them from the atrocities of the Zionist occupying regime.
Asked about the methods he would recommend to the international community for supporting the Palestinians, he said that at present the international community is expected to back the democratically-elected government of Palestine.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran will extend fresh support to the people of Palestine to help alleviate their economic and social plight.
Addressing the conference, Mottaki called on Islamic and Arab states to help the Palestinians.
“The performance of certain states in freezing aid for the Palestinian people will have no impact on their strong will,“ he said.
Talking to IRNA on the sidelines of the conference, a Cuban parliamentarian on Sunday called for establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Qods as its capital.
Cuban MP K.S. Puig also called for the return of all Palestinian refugees to their homeland.
She said the main problem in Palestine is the Zionist occupation of Palestinian territory.
“Palestinians should be supported in the defense of their rights not only by Muslims but also the international community which should extend financial and spiritual support to these suffering people,“ she said.
Puig further said that the ongoing Tehran conference could help break the huge silence on the suffering and oppression of Palestinians and mobilize the international community to take up the defense of their rights.
In another interview with IRNA on the sidelines of the conference, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said in Tehran other countries should follow the pattern set by Iran in helping Palestinians with their liberation campaign.
“I think, if other countries, other Islamic states, especially the Arab ones, feel 10 percent like Iran for Palestinians, I don’t think there will remain any problem. I am sure of this,“ Berri said.

Leader:
Islamic Community
At Decisive Juncture
TEHRAN, April 16--Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Sunday the Islamic community has reached a milestone and a decisive juncture in its history.
Ayatollah Khamenei was receiving the heads of the three branches of government, senior officials and ambassadors of Muslim countries to Tehran on the auspicious occasions of the birth anniversaries of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Jafar As-Sadeq (AS) as well as the Unity Week, IRNA reported.
The leader added that if Muslim political, scientific and cultural elites fulfill their duties and help the community unite and resist the bullying powers, Muslims will become prosperous, advanced and glorious.
“Otherwise, the Islamic community will fall behind the path of prosperity by tens of years,“ he said.
Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized that Muslims should appreciate their invaluable history, heritage and grandeur, and refrain from disputes and narrow-mindedness.
“The Muslim elites should avoid personal gains and material values, and prioritize Islamic solidarity. This is because the enemies have closed ranks to harm the weak Islamic unity. The proof of this postulate is the existing conditions of Iraq and other regions of the world,“ he said.
The leader noted that if the Muslim world had stood united, the Palestinian nation would not have been left alone or faced pressures.
“If the Islamic community had stood united, the people who are responsible for the sufferings of Palestinians would not have spoken as if Palestinians are indebted to them,“ he said.
Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that Muslims should stand united and support the Palestinian cause.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the same gathering that currently the human race needs to learn from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and remain committed to divine values.
“The human race should promote knowledge and morality, support the deprived and the oppressed, help avoid the hegemony of great powers over the world and promote peace, calm, justice and human dignity,“ he said.

Cannes Film Festival May Select ’Hafez’
TEHRAN, April 16--Noted Iranian director Abolfazl Jalili’s latest offering ’Hafez’ may compete at Cannes Film Festival.
According to ILNA, the festival’s jury is currently assessing the film.
Jalili noted that the jury is having a tough time because many famous movie directors are vying for a place in the festival. “Currently we are working on the editing, sound recording and other technical aspects of the film. We are determined to complete these stages as soon as possible so that if the film is selected for the festival, we do not face any problem in meeting the schedule,“ he said.
Jalili’s previous film ’Gol-Ya-Pooch’ was received enthusiastically by the audience and critics alike during Tehran’s 24th International Fajr Film Festival.

Prospects of US Talks Not Bright

Ali Akbar Velayati
TEHRAN, April 16--Leader’s advisor on international affairs, Ali Akbar Velayati, said given the destructive moves of Americans and their political confusion in Iraq, it is a remote possibility that negotiations with them will get anywhere.
Velayati further said that in view of the American attitude regarding Iran’s readiness for talks and the Iraqi situation, it’s clear that they are not frank with us and the Iraqi nation and government, IRNA reported.
Asked why Iran accepted the Iraqi request to hold negotiations with the US regarding Iraq, he said, “The issue of holding talks with America, which has been verified by the Islamic system, only concerns Iraqi affairs and nothing else. It must be noted that this was not the wish of Iran and rather a demand raised by the Americans.“
Velayati, who is also a former foreign minister, called on negotiators dealing with Iran’s nuclear case to prepare for further talks, adding that they should act in a prudent manner and realize that a new era has begun.
“Iran has overcome the artificial block that they had created,“ he said.
He noted that the global situation is such that some western countries do not wish to see a third-world country, especially a Muslim state, acquire peaceful nuclear technology.
“Many countries tried hard throughout the years (to gain access to peaceful nuclear technology), but they were ultimately prevented from joining the global nuclear technology club,“ he said.
He pointed out that the Libyans also pursued nuclear activities, but could not withstand pressures and handed all their achievements to the Americans.
“Then they realized that they had been ripped off and confessed that Americans did not fulfill their commitments,“ he said.
Asked whether this new phase is an opportunity or a threat for Iran, the advisor said that if countries located in sensitive regions, which are influential in global equations, make every move effectively, it becomes an opportunity, otherwise it’s a threat.
Velayati further said that the former governments of Mir Hossein Mousavi, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami as well as the incumbent government have held the same stance regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
“This is because the issue of nuclear activities is a national and public demand,“ he said.

Perspec
Unintelligent
By Soheil Mohajer
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak last weekend made some public comments that will likely make the job of forging Middle East peace more, not less, difficult.
Mubarak, long seen as irrelevant to developments unfolding rapidly in the volatile region, tried to make a point about Iraq but instead made a huge diplomatic blunder only to find himself on the wrong side of that country’s and other Arab peoples.
In a talk with the Al-Arabiya satellite TV, the pro-West leader of Egypt said Iraq is “effectively in a civil war.“ Parroting western charges about Iran’s role and influence, he claimed “There are Shiites in all these (regional) countries, and Shiites are mostly always loyal to Iran and not the countries where they live.“
The unintelligent and outrageous comments shocked many Iraqi and regional leaders, both Shiite and Sunni who have since demanded an apology from Cairo.
President Jalal Talabani, like most senior Iraqi politicians, denounced Mubarak and called on Cairo to explain.
The prime minister of the war-weary nation, Ibrahim Jaafari said, “The comments have upset the Iraqi people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds, and astonished the Iraqi government.“
One moderate Sunni political analyst who has monitored Egypt for almost three decades, made a very interesting remark about the Egyptian ruler. “Given his credentials, Mr. Mubarak is not in a position to comment on Muslims, leave alone on the Shiites,“ he told this writer.
The flak was not limited to Iraq and Iran and drew fire from Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. One senior Saudi Shiite cleric, Hassan al-Saffar, opined that Egypt’s military ruler had visibly insulted Shiites and called for his apology. In Kuwait, Shiite parliamentarians lambasted the “uncalculated remarks“ and also demanded an apology.
Few doubt that the comments were lowly accusations leveled against the Shiite majority of Iraq and Shiites in other countries. As an analyst at the Al-Ahram Political and Strategic Studies Center, Mohammad Sayed Said, said Mubarak insulted half of the Islamic world because he claimed 65 percent of the Iraqi population (the Shiites) are not loyal to their country, and regional Shiites are rather loyal to Iran than the countries where they live.
Irrespective of what Mubarak may claim, the reality in the regional countries, including Iraq, Bahrain and Lebanon shows that Shiites have always been loyal and proud of the countries where they dwell. Independence of these states is indeed the result of the untiring and selfless endeavors of Shiites.
Studying the history of Iraq and the developments that led to its independence, or the suffering of Lebanese Shiites and their prized victory in kicking out occupiers from their land, the continued and generous financial support from Shiites in Arab wars against the Zionists and their presence in the battlefields is valid proof of Shiite role in defending their integrity and sovereignty.
Any doubts about the Shiite loyalty to the countries where they live, are truly absurd and contradict their effulgent history which plainly shows they have done everything possible to defend their nations and have been respectful citizens.
Today Iraq is in the grip of sectarian violence and deepening instability emanating more from the illegal and brutal US-led military occupation than anything else.
It is not surprising that by invading and occupying Iraq, its enemies want to spread discord and division and provoke some sort of civil strife between the Shiites and Sunnis. It is worthy of mention that these two Iraqi groups have a history of understanding, harmony and friendship despite the tyranny and oppression of their rulers.
Impartial observers and informed people in the Arab world acknowledge that senior Shiite religious leaders and preachers have played a key role in helping prevent a civil war in Iraq despite the fact that terrorists and mercenaries have routinely killed and wounded innocent Shiite men, women and children after the US military occupation.
The present crisis in Iraq demands that all parties that can play an effective role in helping establish security and a popular-based government in that country rise to the occasion.
The Arab world can and must play its role before it is too late.
Age may be catching up with Mubarak. However, the uncalled for comments raise pretty serious doubts about his true intentions and that of other pro-western Arab rulers close to Cairo.
To say the least, such irresponsible statements will hinder not help the oppressed Iraqi people’s drive for peace, stability, democracy and political independence. One Arab leader has knowingly harmed the already painful political process in Baghdad. We can only hope the damage can be contained by the wise Sunni and Shiite leaders in and outside Iraq.
