Whistling a Stereotypical Asian Tune

A few weeks ago, a 20-something Caucasian male, who strangely had Asian features (i.e., broad face, narrow eyes, dark complexion), whistled at me the introduction of a song called "I think I'm Turnin' Japanese" by The Vapors who recorded the song in the 1980's.

Recently, Incubus and Liz McPhair each covered the song. This Caucasian male whistled this ancient asian melody at me when I passed him in a grocery store in Austin, Texas. He whistled the tune again when he passed by me. He and I passed each other a few more times, and each time, he whistled the tune. His lips didn't move when he whistled, so he thought he was being sly.

I finally decided to confront him about his whistling and told him that I found his whistling the tune very offensive. At first, he denied the whistling, and then, he stood close to and square in front of me and yelled, "I don't care if you don't like it! What are you going to do about?"

I replied "Nothing. I just want you to stop whistling that offensive tune." He replied, "Just as I thought." and walked away whistling the tune and looking back at me.

Physically, I could have snapped his neck without any problems. He was short and small. But, I decided to approach him civilly.

I consulted a store manager who was young. He wanted to meet the racist Caucasian, and I showed him where he was. The racist first denied whistling and then finally admitted it when we caught him trying to cover his lies. The manager told us, "Stay away from each other." The racist walked away, saying "I can whistle out in the parking lot, and there's nothing you can do about it." I replied, "I'll call the cops."

The manager stated, "Obviously, he's a jerk. Stay away from him, and I'll watch out for him to see if he does anything." He didn't say anything admonishing to the racist even when the racist admitted the offense.

A few minutes later, the racist passed by me, looked at me, but didn't whistle. I think he was surprised to see me when he rounded a corner.

Another store manager stated the following day that the store wouldn't deny the racist admission into the store because the store is afraid of lawsuits. Also, I talked with 3 police officers, and they all stated that the law doesn't prohibit a person from verbally insulting anyone. The only defense I have is to verbally insult the racist.

I called and emailed my state representative and state senator. Neither office has responded to the phone call or email.

Racists like the one I encountered are everywhere. I have been a victim of racial harassment at work as well. I'm a firefighter of a city department that has about 1100 firefighters.

Popular songs that negatively stereotype asians is damaging the reputation and image of Asians. These caucasians do not care about the harm they cause. They indulge in racial harassment as though it's free candy or beer.

We must fight every company that promotes negative stereotypes of Asians because companies including musicians significantly influence what and how people, especially young people, think and behave. We must rally together in large numbers and protest their products and advertisements.

I know that if I pushed or hit the racist in the store, then I would have gone to jail more than likely since there were cameras throughout the store. How badly I wanted to injure that racist to punish him for his wrongdoing. Law enforcement and laws do not protect victims of racial harassment.

You're the one perpetuating Asian male stereotypes (Score: 1)

You sit their and ***** to everyone and their mom that a little dweeb is harassing you and then wonder why people think they can get away by harassing Asian men?????

If you threatened to kick that guy's ass, or you actually did kick his ass, he would certainly be dancing to a different tune.

Look in the mirror when you wonder why people are still allowed to get away with picking on and harrassing Asians.

This might sound like something your teachers would tell you in kindergarten, but I've found it to hold true in situations throughout life: Bullies (or in this case, racial harrassers) will only find joy and purpose in calling you names (or whistling tunes) if you let it get to you. If you ignore them, they might just end up feeling pretty unfulfilled and stupid.

On a separate note, I head that song is actually about masturbating. Is that true?

Do you know why he said "Just as I thought?"
You acted just the way people stereotype asians would act. People stereotype asians as little nerds who are to scared to stand up. The fact that you didn't knock him out then and there played into this stereotype. You think you stood up just because you went to the manager or sent some letters. To him and everyone else, that just appears as a cowardly act and you not being able to handle it yourself. Think of it in a kindergarden analogy, nobody is really scared of or has respect for the kid that goes around and taddle tails everything to the teacher. Now if you would have knocked him out like you said u could, you would have proved his racist stereotype wrong and made a statement that you won't be messed around with.

The law can't stop stereotypes, they will always exist. people have this image of asians being little pussies that they can punk around engraved into their mind. Sending letters to state representatives doesn't do anything. Changing laws won't change people's beliefs. You still aren't standing up to the racists and are just playing along with the model minority stereotypes.

These sterotypes will only die out if it is proven wrong on large scales. Unfortunately, there are still too many scrawny little asians that just run to their moms or the teachers when someone messes with them. And thats exactly what people expect them to do.

You seriously think if everyone acts like you then the stereotypes are gonna go away? Well, when will anyone stop messing with asians if they simply let themselves get bullied each time. You think you're gonna scare them from messing with you by reporting it? Wow thats some toughness right there.

No hard feelings intended since I'm a fellow asian. Experience had shown me that those who don't stand up will be constantly bullied. But those that make it known that no one will get away with messing with them will get more respect.

What do you expect living in Texas! It is the number one state with the most networks of race haters. I believe there is about 58 different groups from the KKK to the National Alliance. Check http://www.splcenter.org
(click on intelligence reports and hate group map)

For those who think the man should fight back by knocking the racist out, let's get into a reality check. First, both of you guys are strangers. Second, you don't know if the racist is part of a hate group especially in Texas. If you did hit the guy, his croonies would be looking for you and be out number. So, for those out there that would hit the racist, you better be in a gang with plenty of members to back you up because in Texas there are plenty around, especially in the prison or jails!

You would be a fool going alone. Also, don't forget America allow hate as part of free speech. You could even preach white hatred. But, wait you would be label as a terrorist or someone with an agenda against the white America. Hold on a sec, it sounds like a conspiracy ignoring another terroist existing in America since the Civil War. The white supremacist, KKK and etc! You wonder why these terrorist are allowed to exist and expand in America. They have long been the terrorist preaching the hate and indifference towards the America people as freely as they choose too. By way of verbal assaults, invisible hate crimes and getting away with murder!

Being a confuse American, I only see certian confuse groups people that should leave this planet. Who are these people! They are not humans. They are fearful of the planet we live on. They will never gasp the truth of the power of being a human and they live the lies they choose to believe in.

We should unite the human race to stand up and end racial hatred. We are all human beings after all. These stereotypes are products of race hate and the only way to fight these battles is to win the war. Winning through constant protests, fights, sacrifices, standing up for ourselves, and other ways neccessary either through peaceful means and unfortunate violence.

Hey, itropical, how were you able to post an article on this website? Are there requirements to start posting content?

Anyways, I think you did the right thing. You obeyed the law and wrote about the incident, alerting the world to continued racism to Asians. And, even tho your letters weren't responded to, they were the right step. Every polital action taken by an Asian will add up like drops in a bucket, so that the govt. (the true force in america) will come to realize the awareness of AA, and how we too must be satisfied as part of American society. Good job avoiding violence! Death solves no problems, but only creates another one.
