Re: you're freaking out over some putz whistling? (Score: 1) by itropical on Thursday, February 24 @ 21:15:57 EST (User Info | Send a Message) | if whistling is no big deal, then what is? to me, whistling was just as offensive as calling me a racial slur. it had the same intent.
do you know how much prejudice there is in employment? hiring and promotion? how about bank lending rates? neighborhood housing? white flight?
whistling is an extension of all this racism which has so many forms.
just because you find it frivolous doesn't mean that it is. harassment is anything that a reasonable person would find offensive. i told this incident to several people, and they all were appalled.
incidentally, how much bias do you harbor? have you looked at yourself since you are so insensitive to rude whistling? |

Re: you're freaking out over some putz whistling? (Score: 1) by itropical on Thursday, February 24 @ 20:51:50 EST (User Info | Send a Message) | i have ignored racist insults. other times, i did confront them; i was stern but not out of control. confronting has worked in the past. the racist attitude didn't stop, i'm sure, but the actions did.
this time, i didn't want to just walk away. if the racist had whistled one or twice, i'd have let it go. but, he did it repeatedly, and that was something that i didn't want to let go.
if i heard a caucasian whistling that tune at you, then i would have confronted that racist even if you kept on walking away. i would have consulted the store manager or whoever was around to put the racist in the spotlight. |

You're the one who is being insensitive. You need a pair of earplugs.
He does not need to get thicker skin or buy earplugs.
He did the right thing by confronting the racist. |

(Score: 1) by steelee on Thursday, March 03 @ 10:28:15 EST (User Info | Send a Message) | I guess one way to "bully" this twerp and send him a quick message, do like what kids did when I was in high school, give him the ol' shove into a locker when he wasn't looking. In your case, bump him firmly into a display. Then if you want apologize facetiously and say it was an accident. He'll get the "message."
Or you could've did the same thing and whistled something equally offensive to him (sorry I'm not hip to any music nowadays) on the next pass.
Of course we're not in HS anymore. You did the right thing confronting him to shut up. It's just a war of words. No need to escalate it into something else.
Most important, would you have felt better if you escalted this or done something more confrontational? You have to see what values are important to you. Look at what that Hmong hunter in Minnesota did, did he help or hurt himself and the community? |
