New broadband offerings from BT Retail and Telewest

Posted: Monday 1st March 2004 by Sam
The Register reports that both BT Retail (the parent company of both BT Openworld and BT Broadband) and Telewest have announced new broadband services this morning.

The offering from BT Retail is simply the basic 512Kbps broadband service, but with a 1GB per month cap imposed. The article goes on to say that further offerings are also expected in the summer. Until then, you can have this service for the oh-so-cheap price of £19.99 per month. The fact that you can already get 512Kbps uncapped services for less than £19.99 a month did not escape BT's attention. Duncan Ingram, MD of BT Openworld, was quoted as saying "Some of our competitors who offer so-called low cost broadband packages which, at best, run at half the speed of BT's basic broadband service."

Whether he was referring to the 256Kbps packages available, or was infact suggesting that BT Broadband's 512Kbps service was more than twice as fast as everyone elses 512Kbps service is unclear. However, if it were the latter, it would be interesting to see what information the claim was based upon as it would clearly contradict the latest ADSLGuide speedtest results.

Telewest's new product is a 256Kbps service, which will not be available until the Spring. The service will cost £17.99 and will have a "recommended" download limit of 750MB per day. For those interested, you can get free installation and a months free service if you are one of the 5,000 who are quick enough to pre-register here.

In other news, a few about another 13 provisional RFS dates passed the 150 day barrier this weekend. This is why there are 13 new dates on the announcements page.

Also, I've made some changes to the exchange maps. When you view a map, you should now be able to click on the surrounding exchanges to get more information about them.
