NTL begins trialling "Pay as you go" broadband

NTHellWorld carries the story that NTL is about to start trials for a pay as you go broadband service in Guildford.

There are four pay as you go packages on offer, a "PAYG 150" (150Kbps), a "PAYG 600" (600Kbps) and a "Plus" variant of both of the those. It has been speculated that the Plus variants may just have more credits. They all work on a credit system, although pricing and the credits-to-gigabytes ratio has not yet been revealed. It is also worth noting that the PAYG 150 packages are boostable to 1Mbit and the PAYG 600 packages are boostable to 2Mbit via the use of a "turbo button". This will of course drain the credits faster though.

There are also two other new services called "HomeWorker" and "1Mb Xtreme" on trial. The HomeWorker service is available to all ntl:home connections at 150Kbps and 600Kbps, and allows the connection to run at 1Mbit during the hours of 8am to 6pm. The 1Mb Xtreme package allows up to 3Mbit during certain hours of the day, although these hours are currently unknown.

It should be noted that all of the boostable services will still have an upstream of 256Kbps, boosted or otherwise.

This type of variable downstream is already available in Bulldog LLU areas and has proved very popular, despite being available at only 35 exchanges.
