Vodafone mulls LLU

Posted: Tuesday 30th May 2006 by Sam
Vodafone has today been discussing the companies future strategy with analysts following this mornings announcement of a £14.9bn loss. According to Reuters, the worlds largest mobile operator is considering unbundling exchanges in order to provide broadband services. This has added credence to earlier rumours that Vodafone was looking at acquiring an existing LLU operator, such as Bulldog or Tiscali. Both of those operators have also been recently linked with o2 (another major mobile operator) as well.

Cable and Wireless' recent financial performance has led many to question the future ownership of their consumer ISP Bulldog, who C&W; have invested some £250m in since they acquired them two years ago. However, in their 2006 results published last Friday, they described local loop unbundling as being a "fundamental part of our UK corporate access strategy" and a "strategic asset" to future plans of providing new telecoms services. So whilst C&W; have yet to completely rule out a sale of Bulldog, it looks like they're certainly not ready to hoist a For Sale sign above the consumer ISP just yet.
