Fresh flurry of activity from LLU providers

Posted: Tuesday 16th May 2006 by Sam
Be, Bulldog, Easynet, Wanadoo and even HomeChoice have all been busy unbundling exchanges recently. There's too many exchanges to list here so, I'll just give a brief summary for each provider and refer you to the relevant provider page where you can see the full lists (ordered by enablement date).

Be Unlimited have been continuing their steady expansion outside of the London area, which first began at the end of March with the Birmingham South exchange. In the past few days their focus has been on extending their already considerable coverage in the West Midlands, and also now in the North West (including Cheshire and Bolton).

Bulldog have been dormant for some time now, but since the announcement of their 16Mbps ADSL2+ service they have really stepped up the pace. In total, they have unbundled 77 exchanges in the past few weeks, having brought may enablement dates forward in the process. There is an outstanding query surrounding the state of a few of those exchanges, but this is something I am chasing up with them at the moment.

Easynet have also been active in the past few weeks, although their focus has been primarily within the M25 area. Their target of 700 exchanges by the Autumn may look like a tall order given their current rate of expansion, but it's certainly feasible - one need only look at some of the other LLU providers to see how quickly coverage can expand.

Wanadoo have had quite a lot of exchanges pending enablement for the end of April for quite some time. The list has been updated today though, and although quite a lot have slipped to the end of May and July, their coverage still stands at an impressive 170 exchanges.

HomeChoice have been the subject of much speculation recently, including rumours of buyouts and investment concerns. However, they seem to have recently brought another four exchanges online, all within the London area though.

The coverage maps produced less than two weeks ago already seem hugely out of date, so I'll update those shortly. Once again, there is a realtime graph depicting each providers rollout progress over time.

Finally, I will be expanding the amount of data presented per LLU provider shotrly in order to better reflect the interest they generate.
