Be announces 2.5Mbps upstream trials

Posted: Tuesday 14th March 2006 by Sam
Be have today announced that they are conducting trials of the Annex M ADSL2+ standard on their network. Annex M allows for an increased upstream rate, and Be have stated they intend to increase theirs to 2.5Mbps.

Trials have been underway since late 2005, and these have seen upstream speeds of up to 1.9Mbps, which is a significant improvement over their current 1.3Mbps upstream. Providing the trials are completed successfully, Be will be upgrading all of it's Office product users for free. This product will certainly appear attractive to existing 2Mbps SDSL users, and it is exactly this market that Be will be looking to expand in to. There was no mention of their home products in the press release. Furthermore, there was no mention of how the upstream speed degrades as line quality decreases.

Be's LLU footprint currently stands at 81 exchanges, with one or two new exchanges being brought online each week at the moment - In the past 3 days, Be have brought Gants Hill and Ilford Central online.

The full press release by Be can be found here.

Update (5pm, Sam): Be have unbundled another exchange today. Shepards Bush is the latest one, taking their total to 82 now.
