Ofcom targets Next Generation Networks

Posted: Tuesday 7th March 2006 by Paul
Ofcom today announced the next stage of its work to encourage competitive Next Generation Networks (NGNs).

NGNs use digital technology to connect telephone calls and other network traffic more efficiently than traditional telecoms networks. Internet Protocol (IP) based services can be developed more quickly and at lower cost to communications providers.

Over time NGNs will offer consumers a wider choice of innovative new products and more value for money. However to ensure these benefits are delivered, providers need to agree the technical and commercial arrangements for connecting to each other’s networks.

Eight companies have already committed to NGN UK. These include: BT Group plc; Cable & Wireless; Easynet; Kingston Communications; NTL; Thus; Vodafone; Wanadoo UK.

We would expect more companies over time to look at NGNs such as other fixed line operators and other mobile operators allowing them to offer converged services.
