BT's future broadband plans

Posted: Thursday 3rd February 2005 by Paul / Sam
Not content with just announcing an additional 500 SDSL exchanges this week, BT Wholesale have today announced a sweeping range of new developments.

First and foremost, BT have announced early plans to trial ADSL2+ at speeds of up to 18Mbps in the UK. There are sadly no further details of this trial yet, but further details should be released within the next few weeks.

In a move set to unnerve the few providers offering broadband over 2Mbps, BT have also announced that they will be offering standard ADSL up to 8Mbps from the autumn. Services up to 8Mbps will be available only to those who can currently receive 2Mbps. Trials for this development are set to begin in April, although there is currently no indication of the ISP's involved or the number of places available.

Finally, a range of pricing changes have also be announced. In areas of high demand, wholesale IPStream Home pricing will be reduced by £1.10 per month and IPStream Office/S pricing will see a £1.40 reduction. It is important to note that these changes will affect only the busier exchange areas, although it is unclear how the ISP's will handle this differential pricing across regions. Datastream and LLU wholesale products will also see further price reductions over the coming months.

BT's press release can be found here. Further details of the trial will be announced here when we receive more information.
